Hey guys, im a serious handgun/shotgun guy. Ive had some cheaper AK rifles/bolt actions/lever guns etc. Im looking for one excellent defensive/shtf rifle for under 1500.00. I want to hear opinions and what guns/calibers you guys use for such purposes. Thinking about an arsenel AK or colt/BCM AR. What say you?

As far as I can tell, astigmatism makes any red dot into a blob regardless of laser projection, LED or tritium/fiber optics.
For me a dash instead of a dot... Learned about this after buying an Aimpoint.... Didn't know I had astigmatism.

Well those were a lot of cool replies with a lot to think about. I love hearing about what everbody is using for their go to rifles, and reading the break off discussion surrounding those posts. Thank you all for the info. I do have a spikes lower with nice magpul stuff on it. I could just slap a BCM upper and optic on it and be done. I also have one of the newer *not as jacked as the old ones, WASR 10 AKs. I thought about selling the WASR and concentrating the funds on the one high quality AR. If I do the nice AR build, would you guys go with a larue mount on the BCM upper and a nice optic? 1-4 power. Does that sound like a good set up?
Suggest saving money on the Larue and get a Burris PEPR Qd mount...

I rely on my RD M92 krink for pretty much everything. Folds up and fits in a tennis racket sized bag, I personally keep it in a bulldog discreet case. Fits behind my truck seat easily.

However, if **** truly hit the fan I would probably keep an assortment of rifles with me.

True for me. And it sucks. Ass.

That was the big deal back when her and Bill were president, remember mag capacity was 10 rounds and nothing resembling an AR was allowed to be sold. If she gets elected again you will need permission to take a gun out of your house and forget concealed carry.
No, if she gets Appointed, you are going to need your gun to take back your freedom just as the founding fathers designed it!!!

Make no mistake, folks, we are at a very critical juncture in this nation's History. What happens in the next 6 months will determine whether God has saved us or removed His hand of protection from America.

If I'm bunkering in at home, I'm GTG with my Garand, SKS, Moisant, M1 Carbine, K98, and Wife who shoots all of them as well or better than me! [emoji6]

If we had to hit the road, I would probably take the M1 and the SKS as I have the most ammo for those and they are about the lightest to carry.

My choice is my PSA AR15. It cost well under the $1500 price mark! It has what I need. It's a mid length rifle with an FN barrel. It's the most accurate rifle I own.

The remainder of that $1500 was spent on sights, a TRS 32 red dot, sling, 15 mags, and a 22 conversion unit with 5 mags!

Model 2 Stag here. 65 grain Game King or 60 grain NBT in the magazines. Several thousand rounds through
it with only a couple failure to chamber issues. Turned out to be some ancient .223 Rem. UMC cases in both cases.
Cases were bulged near the rim of the case, causing them to not fully chamber. Anyway..has been a great rifle
so far.

Glad to see I'm not the only one to think well of the lever gun. ;)

For a lightweight, close range "brush" rifle/carbine, the venerable .30-30 packs a fair amount of "smack factor" into a caliber/bullet combination that doesn't rely upon fragmentation in order to attain ballistic effectiveness, nor does it use pointed FMJ bullets. Bullet weight and design can be chosen by the owner to fine tune the type of ballistic performance desired, too.

As has been mentioned by others, it's generally not intimidating to other folks (versus a plastic semiauto that's often configured by owners in ways that make it appear as though it ought to have a selector switch), and it has a handy integral magazine that can be topped off with relative ease.

I do not own a lever gun. My Dad had a 30/30 which seems to have been lost/traded/returned over the years and decades and I have a couple of fond memories of it. This coming Wednesday when western civilization collapses and the UN troops start taking over, I would probably reach for the pump shotgun (870) which provided some minimal level of comfort over the years.

I guess I'll also chime in. Although I have a couple of M4s,(one being a 6920) my shtf rifle is an AK. I've some actual "field experience" with both and have seen that the 7.62x39 is a little better at fight stopping. It certainly gave me pause many years ago in a hell-hole called Cambodia.

I'm not trying to say the lever is better than an AR for war.
I have an AR that I need to build up, having its accuracy and firepower and general commonality of ammo and parts is great and an advantage over my '94.
But for my needs, SHTF/defense aren't necessarily the same as suiting up and going to battle. For me it implies needing to grab a rifle in short notice and use it. In that instance a lever rifle like my '94 is nice. It has everything I need besides ammo, its slim and quick to the shoulder and I don't have to worry about magazines. It uses a very proven round on just about everything and getting quick hits is easy. I grab the rifle and a handful of shells, Its ready to go.
The AR can also do that and really its becoming the evolution of what we love about the 30-30, although IMO some overdo it with the Ninja stuff.
I just have the 30-30 now, I'm not too worried about it being insufficient.

SHTF means to me, the S has hit the fan and all H is breaking loose.

6 or 7 rounds in a long rifle is not enough to go to battle with. Assuming your not carrying a bandoleer and tube speed loader!

A quality functional semi-auto rile with larger ammo capacity is. My M4/30rnd mag is ready to be grabbed up. Got a couple of 6.8's lying around too!

BUT, I do like the thought of a lever action sound and your confidence! Carry on.

Saying a lever gun is "preferable" over an AR is like saying a revolver is preferable over a semi-auto.

A lever gun certainly is a decent choice but to say it's "better" is just plain wrong.
