I am admitting my ignorance to fixed blade survival knives, and I am seeking knowledge and experience. I want a fixed blade knife I can baton with, I can jam in a tree and stand on the blade and not break it, use it for sparking a ferro rod, and quarter a deer with. Essentially, bomb proof, you couldn't wreck it if you tried blade. Does it exist, and who makes it?
I'm with glockzilla10mm & cranky1 on this. I really think you'd be hard pressed to find a better knife for the money than a Cold Steel SRK. I've put them and my USMC Kabars through the wringer over the years, & never had one fail.
For a larger blade, the CS Trailmaster Bowie gets my vote.
Been using one since 1990. A Carbon V usa model..damn fine blade. Ive hacked trees down to 8" field dressed dozens of deer, 2 elk. Mine came with a junk sheath, but it works, lol.
Great knife.
SRK (Carbon V) is a tough blade but hammering on a kraton butt (it has no protruding tang) will eventually cause some long-term and non-repairable damage.
A good choice is Entrek knives....440 stainless BUT heat-treated properly....tough knives with no gimmicks. Downside? Some of their kydex sheaths are a bit flimsy but an easy fix.
You are correct.
The big prybar is is not good for fine work and the fine work knife isn't going to work for splitting wood.
To be honest, I usually end up with more.
The Axe, Hatchet, Hawk.
The gutting knife.
The Swiss Army/Gerber/Leatherman tool....It is there for other uses, but it has knives.
While not the latest in tactical "gear" a simple multi-use Victorinox SAK (or comparable multi-tool) and machete with a sturdy sheath (and file) will take care of 99% of anything you may encounter in the backwoods of North America.
Hatchet? Dangerous at best.
Axe? A very good choice but only if you have been taught how to correctly use it.
Your profile says that you already have a Glock knife.
My mentor, former paratrooper, bought Glock knives for himself and his girlfriend. He had them re-profiled. They are carried on the outside of their packs. Ok. Bombproof and you already have the knife. You can dig holes with the same.
שבחלאל
I bought another SRK in the current steel (VG1) in early November. Great knife. tom.
