We've talked to death what people "should" carry for SD. Let's see what people actually do. I know there are some options I left off here, but the poll only gives me so many. Just use the "Other" if yours isn't listed.

So this is what you carry MOST OFTEN for concealed carry. Not open carry, or duty carry.

G36 pocket carry during the summer.
G30 in a holster tee shirt in the winter.

One of two favorite combos; the other being a G31 as primary with a S&W640-1 or G43 as second. The Sparks belt in this pic has been replaced with a Mernickle. Holsters by Kramer, and a Rock Island shoots about as well as the Baer. The G31's always shoot & carry well.

Why do you find it so necessary to slam the 357 sig its basically the same as what you prefer just faster / i dont understand your sig bashing. My 11yr old daughter enjoys shooting my 9 so i let her call that hers / she doesnt like me taking that from the safe.
Haters got to hate - LOL!
During the week when I need to pocket carry it's 9mm.
But on the weekends when I can dress and carry as I like?
I go Secret Service with a Sig P229 357 loaded with GDHPs

A potentially interesting corollary thread topic might be which caliber does someone practice with most often, and does it correspond to what they most often carry?

Granted, sometimes it may not be so much the difference in felt recoil and recoil management that might be different, but the platform and/or any significant model differences that might bear closer scrutiny.

I constantly rotate among 9, .40 & .45 for "duty" & "off-duty/retirement" guns, but also usually include one of my .38's & .380's to most range training/qual sessions, to make sure my skillset with the itty bitty guns doesn't start to lapse.

What I carry depends on my mood at the time, for the most part I carry either my Glock 21 or one of my 1911s both in .45ACP I have been known to carry my Delta Elite in 10mm on occassion.

I heard Hillary Clinton always carries hot sauce, too. :ack:

I carry about sixty extra pounds and that is a lot for someone that
is not much over five foot, yes I am kinda spherical but I seem to
roll around pretty good.

Usually when in town, that only happens around once every couple
weeks, I carry a G27.

Most of the time on the ranch I carry a 4.2'' SP 101 357 mag in a
leather holster with around a 12' length of Paracord, six strands,
coiled up and run through the belt loop on the holster.

The cord is on my left shoulder and goes across my chest, the
gun is on my right side.

This works if you have a large backpack on and you can switch
it to either side front or back and you always have some rope for whatever.

It sounds bad but it works great.

The more coils you use the more it spreads out the weight and the more
rope you have for emergencies.

Got a pile of .45 ACP from FM for < $12/ 50 box delivered.

The GLOCK 36 is, by far, the high-time practice pistol.

...as it does not offer the option of extra, on-board misses.

It depends on how far back I define it. I chose 40S&W since I have carried my G27 most over the past 3 or so years. If it is since I started to CC, then it would have to be .357 Magnum, since I carried a 3" S&W 65 for most of that time. I'll admit that over the past year, it has been even between my S&W M&P40 and my Colt Lightweight Commander in 45ACP since switching back to OWB (the Colt winning out more often). Lately though, that might change, since I am seriously looking at a G32. I've had the chance to fire 357Sig pistols a few times, and am really liking the round.

YMMV,

Or, it could be that there are more enthusiasts voting who are pistol shooters, and not revolver shooters.

The .380 already eclipses the .357SIG in the poll, and if you give the G42 another couple of years it might really outdistance the .357SIG.

The 9's numbers are only going to gain more prominence over the other service-type calibers, especially as more private owners may be (understandably) influenced and swayed by the resurgence of the 9's popularity among LE users, and the sales continue to climb for the new single stacks.

I'd actually have thought that 9mm would be more than just half of the vote. A couple weeks ago the concealed carry class I was in was 90% 9mm, and me the oddball with the 10mm

50% of the vote for a single cartridge is a landslide.

Not only that, but 12.5% of the vote is for cartridges equal to or lesser than 9mm. And the number two result...a paltry 14%.

Domination. There isn't really even a 2nd place, there's just 9mm and then "the rest"

Interesting that more people carry the 357 Sig than the 357 Magnum and 38 Special combined. It seems that reports of the 357 Sigs demise may be premature!
Interesting that more people carry .380 than the sig

You go ahead and hang your hat on 7% of the responses in this poll though

My post was directed at people who keep insisting that the 357 Sig is losing popularity. I have a .380 that I occasionally carry as everyone else does but that doesn't relate to the 357 Sig. Also not even mentioned in this poll the 10mm and .45 Gap which are so often compared to the 357 Sig in popularity.

Ok.

The popularity of the little .380 as a personal defensive caliber can't realistically be compared to the .357SIG, though. Different place along the "convenience v. caliber" spectrum. Not unless someone could figure a way to shoe-horn the .357SIG into a really diminutive model akin to the smallest of the .380's, and then compare market demand and resulting sales.

From what I've been hearing from a couple of the gun companies, not only are sales of the .357 on the decline for LE/Gov sales, but commercial sales aren't setting any records, either. I'd have to wonder if any agencies have even thought to ask for a stubby .357 in the size of the Shield or XDs or XD MOD.2 pistol. Neither S&W nor Springfield list .357 as an option in those lines, although they do offer the major service/duty calibers in them.

I'll try to remember to ask if Glock has decided whether making something the size of the G43 in .40 is something they're considering. Without that, they'll not have something of similar size to chamber in .357, which leaves the itty bitty .40 market to S&W and Springfield. Dunno.
