Love my G43, bit I hate the finish on the slide. I never had a problem with my SIG's, XDs, etc like I do with my 43. I dont find it acceptable that the finish rubs off so easy from riding in a holster. This is a weapon built for war yet horsehide, sweat, and humidity are defeating it's coating.. called Glock and they said I have to send it in overnight only at my cost. That is also unacceptable. Smith never charged me for shipping. So until Glock gets a new recipe for a new finish I'm done. I know I'm a small drop in the bucket but Im still a drop non the less. G43 is now for sell.

OP, what firearm are you going to instead?

And, where you happy with the firearm outside of the finish issues?

Sorry yours is being flaky, I've had Glocks from every generation and have found the agency 4s to be a disappointment as well. Not enough to leave, but I'd like to see just it improve...

My first Sig was a P226 WG gun built in 1989 and bought new by me in 1990-91.
It was $650 USD back then. Glocks were around half that if I remember correctly.
It took me 15 years, but I wore 90% of the finish off the Sig slide. It was like black chrome and looked pretty bad ass like that too.

My last P226 TacOps was $999 and that was a pretty good number of years ago as well.
Fast forward to today and look what you pay for a G17 vs a P226. If you don't think there will be a quality difference between them, then Glocks really are as awesome as all the fanboys think they are.
Bottom line, You're either willing to live with Glocks finish till it changes, or you aren't.
I'm personally happy to pay the lower entry fee for the Glock ride.
But there's also nothing wrong with paying more to get more if that's what you want to do.
Best of luck on the next one.

I believe that discontinuing buying a product is the right reaction to product that does not meet expectations.

I have (6)Glocks left, (2) which have a finish that are exceptional while (4) have today's finish which is sub par in comparison. I will probably sell (3) of the 4 eventually and call it an action of taste and preference.

I'm not leaving, but I'm not buying either, I am a shooter not a collector but I do realize product that has diminished quality.

For those die hards good for you, you probably will delay or detain any improvement in this area, you should be proud of such accomplishment and wait for Gastons future in suit and health.

I understand the slide finish is not what it used to be, but in what other ways has Glock's quality diminished ?

Brass to face ? Other issues?

I'm seriously asking out of genuine curiosity.

If the cosmetics of a handgun are important to you, research holsters that reduce wear. I did and all my Gen4 guns look nearly new after many hundreds to thousands of presentations. I use Cooks brand Kydex or Remora and have no complaints. My G43 looks as new after nearly a year of carry and over 1k draws.

If they ever wear beyond what I'm happy with, I'll call up CCR or another competent refinishing company and refresh the gun.

Or.... You could sell it and find something you are happy with. For me, function comes before form. There are options available to me to have both.

Carry a parkerized PT, RIA, Para, or Remington 1911 and you'll know what fast holster wear is. Thing with those...they rust when the finish is gone. Haven't seen a rusty Glock, yet, that has a worn finish on the slide.
I have been EDC since 1981. Prior to my G19 Gen 3 I got last year. I carried a Rock 1911 GI FS that after 5 years looks like 20+ years of use. The holster makes a big difference whether its lined or unlined.

I have three gen's 4 glocks. My g21 stays on my nightstand, my g17 is my range gun and my g43 aka "the baby" spend most of the time on the glove compartment. I had several glocks in the past and definitely the gen's 4 finish is the worst. I do care about my gun locks and I like to keep them in best shape possible because I do care about resale value just in case I feel the need to trade/sell them.

Probably I won't sell them in the near future becauae I love them they shoot/perform great.
I understand that some members on this forum are very passionate about their Glock guns, and they take personal every negative comment about it, but there are other guns out there that performs as good as any other Glock pistol, and have better/durable good looking finish.

if the op decides that Glock doesn't satisfy him what's the big deal Glock is not going to be out of bussiness, not everybody must have or like glocks.

good luck on whatever you decide enjoy and be safe.

I agree some of the recent finishes are not as resilient as some from several years back but do seem as good as some of the early Glock finishes. Fortunately they seldom seem to rust. If I carry and use a gun regularly I expect some wear.

This isn't a Glock phenomenon. Has anyone picked up a Ruger, Remlin, etc... built post 2008. They all suck.
I won't buy a new smith or any of the others if I can find an old used one.
Go hang on Sig Forum a while. You'll see all the same issues show up there too.
Many Sig owners will tell you the same thing you are hearing here, they want the Sigs of the past back as well.

Like Rocky, I'm done buying Glocks. Not because of any issues, but because I'm happy with the ones I have. I really don't need or want more, I'd rather spend the money on ammo to shoot these. I just have no desire to collect or keep pretty guns anymore, so I'm ok with my new finish Glocks.

I'm not done buying Glock pistols just because of the less than stellar finish. Still on my bucket list is a Glock 41, Glock 26, and maybe a MOS Glock pistol (don't know which one yet). The Glock pistol platform has proven to be (at least to me) an outstanding value for the money.

My Gen 3 G27 has the old "frying pan" finish. The edges of the front of the slide are worn smoother, or shinier, from holstering. Some of the finish has worn off the Glock night sights.

Anyhoo, I think some holster wear gives an attractive look to a well used firearm.

As long as your gun isn't rusting, which apparently it isn't, then I would keep on shooting and carrying it without a second thought. Glocks aren't meant to be pretty, they are meant to function.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I don't buy Glocks to put them in a glass case. Do you care if your hammer gets a scratch?

I buy them to defend myself or family. Reliability is and always will be far away my motivation to choosing a handgun.

Take a look at Kyle Defoor's Glock 19. It looks like it was drug from the back of a car. It means he has holstered, presented, shot, and trained his Glock to proficiency.

First of all you would not spend $600.00 on a hammer. Secondly, you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.

I can only surmise that in putting the best foot forward that customer satisfaction is evaluated by the consumer. Fewer satisfaction, fewer sales leaves the manufacturer evaluating what has or has not been done. Your acceptance and analogy of a hammer leaves most who consume the impression that like the water in Flint , please take another drink.

I just don't get the mentality. It's a gun to be holstered and unholstered, take abuse, and still FUNCTION. If you want a gun that's sexy you're in the wrong forum. Does it work? Okay then that's all I care about.

Same thing with golf clubs. You go to these message boards and they've bought a 1200 dollar set of clubs and post pictures of them after a season looking pristine ??? A golf club is basically a stick used to hit a ball on the ground. What do you expect? They're supposed to look like they do in Dick's Sportng Goods?

Have a corvette that stays in the garage and never gets driven? Have fun with that. When you're eighty and looking back at life you can think back how good and shiny that vette looked in the garage.

I have used my Glocks up to 27k rounds a year, your analogy if directed to me is inaccuracte. I have no safe queens.

The issue is not wear but Quality, you confuse the two. Endurance of Quality is the measurement, again I believe what we have today is not comparing hammers, vettes or golf clubs. Fortunately I cannot compare to any hobbyists pursuits, only buying product that meets my expectations.

Ps the word abuse may be the key, I've never considered my gun handling to be abusive.

I've tried (just about) all the major platforms out there and have stayed with Glocks for the last 20 or so years. For me, nothing else is even close for A) functionality, and B) reliability. I don't own pretty but all that for how much?!!!) All the others are gone now but I own a bunch of glocks and my favorite one SO FAR is the 43. Holster wear? Name me a gun that is immune to that?! If it doesn't affect A or B I don't care. If Glock as a company has declined so much recently (according to some) how is it they are still able to bring (multiple) exciting new products to the marketplace? Do they have minor issues here and there? Of course, name a company that doesn't.

Maybe if the finish started off very nicely polished and blued I would be more concerned when it wears. The decade old "frying pan" finish seems more strong and consistent, but not necessarily what I would equate with excellent craftsmanship. I am sure Glock could do a finish that consistently is better than some of the recent efforts. I am not sure they could while keeping the current price and the current level of production.

wear happens.

send it to glock and have it refinished or get it cerakoted.

all my guns have wear and tear, the only one that almost brought a tear to my eye was my 1976 python, then i got over it and put another 150rds through it.

#70 ·
I'm not sure if it matters but the coating you are talking about wearing off is mainly cosmetic. The metal is nitride treated which makes it very durable. The black finish is added to keep it from being shiny but it has absolutely nothing to do with the durability or corrosion resistance of the metal.
