Thank you for that... It does exactly as you say except with the slide off (or on) the piece will rattle even if you do not depress the firing pin safety. When the gun is cocked there is no rattle just as you say. It just concerns me that all of a sudden my gun rattles after a gunsmith worked on the trigger assembly. I watched every thing he did and he did have the slide assemble apart. In the YouTube video showing how to do the 25 cent trigger job there is a part where the poster says you can bend this right angle piece (forgive me I just know how to shoot them) just a little and it may help smooth the trigger pull. My gunsmith bent it a little. When he put the gun back together it didn't work. when you pulled the trigger, instead of going click, it made a crunching noise and the firing pin did not activate. After much trial and error he unbent that piece of metal a bit and the gun worked. Could be a coincidence, I don't know.
Not that I've owned a lot of guns, but I currently have 4 semi pistols (this is my first Glock) and none of the other ones rattle. I'm probably going to drive myself crazy over this.
If that "right angle piece" is the trigger connector, or the bar I would replace it. Messing with the geometry of these critical parts is bad. I can't believe a gunsmith would do that.
Thanks. I will figure out which piece it is and have it replaced...
