Interested in hearing from people who use it or don't use it. I find myself going back and forth with it on my G22. I like the added support, being able to choke up on the grip but it also changes the traditional Glock grip slightly. The only reason I went with it originally was the occasional slide bite. Looking at adding a G19 to collection and not sure if I should just go with a gen 3 or 4, do I want to have the beavertail option.
I found that the beaver tail caused my point of aim to drop slightly. I prefer my gen 4 with no backstraps, that size fits my hand better than the gen 3 did. I had a G19 gen 4, but sold it and bought a G26 gen 4. Five years ago I had a gen 3 G 26.
Personally, I find the very low height of Glock barrel axis above the grip makes a high "1911-style" grip inappropriate...thus I've never found any value to the Gen4 beavertail backstrap. I use the M non-beavertail backstrap on my G31.
The standard Glock grip just works for me. I must have "normal size hands" - I really don't but the G23 and G17 just fit perfectly so I leave them alone.
I don't CC the G17/34/41, so the M BT is on all of them. Mike M is right...the M BT makes my G41 feel like a Gen 3 non SF G21. The M BT on the G34 makes the grip feel like the G41 without the added thickness of the 41. Personally, if I only slow fired my Glocks, I wouldn't even have them on. I have enough meat in the web of my hand for good control when not shooting fast.
I use the smaller of the two beavertails on my Gen 4 G19. With my hands and my preferred method of gripping the gun (think high, except much higher) they are a necessity if I'm going to get through a magazine without spraying blood all over the place. For me they're a very welcome addition to the options on Glock pistols.
While I wear a large size glove, my hands aren't fat. As such, I don't use any of the back strap options on Gen 4s (G17, G19, G22). While I wouldn't consider selling my original G27, I highly prefer the grip size of the Gen 4 without a back strap. However, I've never had any problems with slide bite on any pistol I've ever shot.
Got the small beavertail on my wife's gen4 G19 simply because I can't break her of the habit of riding her left thumb on top. This stops it. I'm amazed she hasn't got cut badly before now. If she would ever learn I'm sure she would like no backstraps much better.
Funny...since I've been visiting, here, I've seen Glock leg, Glock knuckle, and Glock finger. I don't see other pistols with these names. It's interesting.
The Glock knuckle bit is for real. Rounding off that trigger guard a bit had to be done. Adding the BS to mine did nothing for that problem.
It sounds like it's a mixed bag of yes I use them and no I don't. Good thing it's a option!
I shot my gen 4 with all the different backstraps and I prefer it without any installed. I have large hands but not chubby so I don't get any slide bite. I shoot my gen 3 just as well as my gen 4 and can't really tell a difference other than I do prefer the texture of the gen 4 grip. I kick myself for not buying a gen 3 RTF G19 a few years ago. I think it would have been good.
The beavertail backstrap is the main reason I came back to Glock. I have huge hands and use a high grip, so I was getting some slide bite without the beavertails.
I use the M beaver tail on my 26 as well. Seemed to make my grip fall into place.
