Ruger 10/22 sight installment

I tapped out the rear sight in my Ruger 10/22 then putting in a Hi-Vis replacement sight it will not fit in the slot without slipping out. Do I have a faulty part? Or should I just slap some "lock-tight" on it? This obviously isn't a common problem because I have searched the internet.

If the dovetail wasn't damaged removing the factory sight, it does sound like you have an under-sized replacement... DT should be 3/8", can you measure both sights with a caliper?

If it is smaller than the original what do I do to place it in the slot. Glue, brass shim (where do I get those)?

Is your 10/22 a very old or very new model? Is it new, or used? If used, did it still have the original sight in the rear dovetail, or a replacement sight (could be a sign that the previous owner had already filed-off some metal in the dovetail to get a new sight to fit)?

"These sights are o.k. but there were a few things I don't like:1.) The rear sight was too loose in the dovetail. I could slide it right through by hand with very little resistance. I had to use shims and loctite 680 to get it installed correctly. My factory sight is snug so I'm not sure why it didn't fit."

It's possible that Ruger just changed the spec for the dovetail at some point, and yours is the older style.

Depending on exactly how loose it is, it might be fixed with shim(s), center- or pin-punching a few dimples on the sight and/or in the dovetail, peening the dovetail slot itself, LocTite stud and bearing mount (screw glue), or installing a setscrew to tighten the fit.

Solder it in there, or peen/stake the dovetail so it grips the sight better.

FWIW, take a look at Tech Sights. I am a firm believer in them.
