This Is What Happens When You Demand More Than Minimum Wage (McDonald's)

It's happening faster than I thought.

The Okie Corral

Quote:
"I believe this store is in Romeoville, IL. It's next door to their Innovation Center.

This McDonald’s is actually pretty unique. First of all it’s owned by McDonald’s, it’s not a franchise. Second, this is the store where McDonald’s tests all the new technology. New griddle? It gets tested here first. New ordering monitors, new deep fryer, all tested here first. If it doesn’t work here, they don’t offer it to their franchisees. They test everything in this store for YEARS before it gets mass produced so they’re sure it works well and is cost-effective.

I used to work for a McDonald’s supplier and we took a tour of their Innovation Center (which is right behind this store) and it included a tour of this store. They were experimenting with all sorts of cool things; they were pumping fragrances in the entrance foyer (the little area between the two entrance doors) to make you more hungry and the ordering monitors were there (this was about two years ago).

So whatever that store looks like now, all new McDonald’s stores will look the same, with the same technology, 4-5 years into the future."

Those are not in "test" phase.

I have seen them in European (Swiss) McDonalds for about 4 or 5 years.

I wonder if these kiosks could actully work better than a cashier. But it seems the people at the register also make and pour the beverages and put the fries into a bag or box and put the order into a bag. I imagine some or much of that could also be automated but I wonder at what cost.

Yep, unskilled labor will price themselves out of a job! Obamacare will cause this too.

Interesting times coming. When those low wage workers become full time no wage workers the burden in going to increase on those who pay taxes. Which will cause some of them to quit paying taxes when they lose their jobs or just give up and join the herd. I believe the term is death spiral. If the government would keep out it could be a good thing in the long run, constructive destruction as it were, one business folds, another opens to take advantage of an opportunity. But the government makes it harder for people to do anything and less likely to risk anything so most likely the welfare rolls will just build. There are limits to that and the longer you put off the accounting the harder it is going to be.

We have those at a local chain of quick stop stores called Buckees. They are pretty cool, you can start filling up your tank, order your breakfast taco from the pump area while you do it and then go get your taco after you are filled up.

I work in the food and beverage industry, you might be surprised what can be done.

Mostly automated equipment got all the ingredients "made" that are in the store. One more piece of equipment to put them together isn't that far off.

I've only had one Buckees experience but it was really neat. I didn't need fuel when I went there so I've not seen the order entry capacity of the pumps. Wish they'd bring those north of the Red...QuikTrip needs some competition here in the Tulsa area.

I give myself credit for this - I see my campaign of posting a demand for self-service ordering at fast food restaurants, particularly McDonald's, every time the minimum wage increase is mention in the press or on Facebook has finally paid off.
