Whats new on your play list?

As many know, I am, among other things, a metal guy. Right now I am on a Melvins and Electric Wizard kick.

I am telling you, if you like slow punk/doom metal, The Melvins are...well, they are just so fornicating good. These guys have a grove that catches you.

Electric Wizard is Black Sabbath...if Black Sabbath had been darker...

I am also putting a lot of The Mountain Goats into my rotation...because John Darnielle is simply one of the best songwriters out there right now.

This IS NOT metal. This is damned near folk.

Wow! Thanks a lot.. You just cost me a album. Love that Mountain goats album.
Do you dig Buckethead? I love his mellow stuff. Electric Sea. Electric Tears. Colma. A real diamond in the rough.
My latest purchase was Buchethead Areal diamond in the rough.

Last song I downloaded was Chevelle's "Take out the gunman." Thanks for the Electric Wizard suggestion, they are pretty good. I would like to know your top 10 metal bands, always looking for new music ideas.

I saw the Melvins in Orange County, CA about 8 months ago along with Unsane. Fantastic! Electric Wizard? I have four of their LP's on Rise Above. Wish I had more.

Some of the latest additions to my burgeoning collection that you may like:

Havohej ‎– Purple Cloak 7"
Cara Neir - Portals to a Better, Dead World LP
Hivesmasher - Gutter Choir LP
Failures - Failures 7"
Yellow Eyes - Hammer of Night 12"
Yellow Eyes ‎– The Desert Mourns 12"
One Master - The Quiet Eye of Eternity LP
"S" word And Shine – SXSW Showcase LP
Slomatics ‎– Estron LP
Yob ‎– Catharsis CD
Yob ‎– Elaborations Of Carbon CD
The Body ‎– Master, We Perish 12"
The Body ‎– Christs, Redeemers 2xLP

Note, I also suggest some of the Experimental/Noise/Ambient/Math Rock stuff out there. I used to think Synthpop was for youngsters and girls but some of that stuff is downright dark and brooding. Some of my very latest acquisitions I'd suggest (some are from local live shows, hard to get):

Damien Dubrovnik ‎– Patterns Of Penetration 7"
Croatian Amor & Lust For Youth ‎– Pomegranate LP
Shallow Waters ‎– Equal Eyes LP
Emaciator ‎– Reflection 2xLP
The Littlest Viking – The Littlest Viking LP
The Littlest Viking ‎– Labor & Lust LP
Blood Bright Star ‎– Solar Infinite CD
Some Ember ‎– Asleep In The Ice Palace Cass
Hollow Sunshine ‎– Held Above LP
Glochids ‎– Originals LP
High aura'd, Blood Bright Star ‎– Split 7"
Various ‎– Frozen In Time - Music To Accompany The Films Of Ingmar Bergman 3xCass
L'Acephale ‎–Decollate Cass
Anemone Tube / Dissecting Table ‎– This Dismal World Cass
Lull ‎– Way Through Staring LP
Nicodemus ‎– Toxic Crunch LP
Work/Death ‎– Phone About To Ring LP
Ron Morelli ‎– Backpages 12"
Christian Stadsgaard ‎– The Source Of Disintegration LP
TR Kirstein & Jacob Kirkegaard ‎– Imperia LP
Kommando R.J.F. ‎– Sweet Slow Suicide LP
The Stranger ‎– Watching Dead Empires In Decay LP
Kevin Drumm ‎– Imperial Distortion 3xLP

I am OK with Buckethead. I dig his skill but think a lot of it is more of a novelty than anything else. I do like his work with Les Claypool.

I am a Metal head to my core, so I love good shredding and people like Buckethead or Malmsteen are the lords of that...but that doesn't always make for the best music. BB King never shredded anything in his life but can play three notes with more soul than some amazing technical speed shredders can.

I don't know. While it is obvious that I listen to the more obscure stuff, so I know my way around the genre, I think most people who are real Metal Heads would be disappointed how "commercial" my list would be.

I don't care what anyone says, groups like Metallica and Megadeth, that can connect with such a large audience, do so because they make brilliant music.

Metal is a really small genre. Any metals head knows, that with the exception of a few bands, you can see the biggest names in Metal playing small venues....like bar venue small.

The few bands that have connected with a crossover audience did so because they experimented and won.

Not metal, but have you heard any Les Claypool Duo De Twang? Saw them a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it.

'Russian Circles' is a band that is new to my playlist. They were in town a few weeks ago for a sold out show. I had never heard of them before, but I like it. Good epic sounding rock(mix of heavy and soft stuff), just instruments, no singing.

I don't have a play list. Therefore I have nothing new on it.

very, very not metal:

Skylar Grey. Don't judge me.

Known for her hooks and that one song that Rhianna sang... she has some pretty good stuff of her own.

Words, Final Warning, Wear me out.

and C'mon Let Me Ride is hilarious.

Speaking of Metal for Rabbi......

Behemoth will be just up north of you in my area(Austin) next month.

I guess I also need to add their new album on here, since that is also a recent addition to my playlist.

I have not moved passed Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Helloween, Manowar or Judas Priest. It's been fun introducing my kids to that old crap. They love it. My four year old goes crazy when we play Black Wind Fire and Steel from Manowar. Me and my three boys are the 4 Kings of Metal!

Very true. I live South and East of Los Angeles and near Orange County.

At the smaller venues they are vicious and frightful on stage yet afterwards they are approachable and in general some of the friendliest and most gracious people I have ever met.
