Russia Invades Part of Ukraine

It seems that Russia has landed troops in Crimea (Southern Ukraine) and has essentially invaded another country.

Hold on folks, this could get interesting. Will this be another Georgia? Could this start a broader war?

Uh oh! And Obama just warned him yesterday that we were watching him.

Obama has stated there will be "costs" for doing this. I wonder if the costs will exceed our $17T in debt. Might not be able to afford this one.

DailyMail reports we have a treaty with Ukraine:http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...going-war.html

This could be a ****ty situation.

Would the A-10, a cold war relic designed to kill Russian tanks on the open plains of Europe be useful now? Let's ask Chuck Hagel.

Well Russia has a warm water naval base there. It's kind of like gitmo but this is another Georgia situation I'm afraid.

As much as I respect the Ukranians and sympathies with their plight, I can't see what our national interest is there.

Yes, but that was a sucker bet for the Ukraine and we knew it. We wanted them to surrender the Soviet nukes they took with them when they left, so the treaty says we will help defend their borders in exchange for them doing so. Their nukes are long gone and there is no upside for the U.S. or U.K. to honor their pledge now. There's just some lip service coming from the administration which is a bluff and Putin knows it.

In the same manner that we knew that Russia wouldn't really do anything when we put missiles in Turkey, they know that we won't do anything now if they move into the Ukraine.

Well it isn't a good development. The Russians should stick to defending their base at Sevastopol. I think they have a lease there like we have at Guantanamo. Anyway, Crimea was actually a part of Russia, not Ukraine, until 1954. Looks like among the people there who want to go with Russia, the ones who want to stay with Ukraine and the ones who want independence things will only get worse.

The real danger here is not that we give a %$#@ about the Ukraine, but that the entire Democrat power structure in DC is currently debating whether and how much military action will improve their image enough to help significantly in the 2014/16 elections.

Exactly, we promised to defend them if they gave up their Soviet nukes. They already did that so there is no more reason to keep our promise.

CNN is reporting that President Obama has sent Vice-President Biden to the Office Depot to buy some Dry Erase markers so he can draw a Red Line!

That country will be split in two with the Russian speaking eastern half going to Russian control or partnership and the western Ukrainian speaking half going to European partnership. Like a new Berlin almost.

Actually, the only Ukrainians I have ever known were what the police mis-named a "Russian Mafia" group, when I represented the one who was allegedly the ring leader of a gang involved in stealing expensive cars and smuggling them to the former USSR countries (and having a witness shot). Every one of them that walked into the courthouse (except the one with bullet holes and a walker) had a young, hot Ukrainian girlfriend. They all looked like sisters, pretty much.
