I have no hate for the 40 S&W, I just didn't see the need. When the round came out I was already heavily invested in 9mm, 45 auto, 357 mag and 45 Colt/454. I felt like I was pretty well covered for handgun rounds.

One round I did pick up since the unveiling of the 40 was a 10mm in the form of a G20, but my hands weren't big enough to hold onto the blame thing. Now with the sf frame I have a G21sf that I like, but I already sold all my 10mm stuff and really see no need to go back to the 10 since I also can set-up for the 45 Super with the G21sf.

Another round I like is the 9x23 Winchester. In a widebody 1911, it holds right around 20 rounds. Used to be the 357 mag with a 125 jhp @ 1450 fps was considered The SD round, bar none. Well, the 1911 in 9x23 spits out virtually the same round and hold 3 times the number of shells of a revolver... and the recoil is really manageable in this platform.

I thought about picking up a 40 after I went to the gun club and picked up almost 1500 rounds of 40 S&W brass one afternoon. There must have been a local LEO training that day. But, I ended up selling the brass instead.

I wouldn't feel undergunned if I had to carry a 40 on duty or as a SD/PD weapon, but likewise, I don't feel that way with the 9x19, 9x23 Win or the 45, either.

It's hard to be one man arguing against the 40 s&w when FBI and so many other LE outfits carry it. I honestly buy into the argument that with quality ammo the differnece isn't worth thinking about. If the FBI wants between 12-18" of penetration 9,40, and 45 can all do that. So, were talking about the size of the wound channel. A 9mm +p HST will expand more than a starndard pressure 9mm HST in ballistic gellatin. Doesn't expand as much as a 40 HST, but I just don't know if it's worth getting worked up about. So, more rounds and less recoil are worth it to me.

Plus James Yeager says 40 s&w guys have small dicks.

All of that is why I made the switch to the .40. Well, except it's in a 27
I've got a 21 but it's only because I've got a lot of old 230 gr. FMJ lying around. I have considered selling the ammo and trading into a 22 or 35.

My question is, aside from the complaint about the snappy recoil (fair objection if you do not shoot this round often, I find it very manageable after enough practice), it seems like there is a lot of hate for this round just for the sake of hating it.Why is that?
I won't use that word, but I'm far from a fan of the 40S&W. 9mm and 45ACP are my choices in SD calibers.

I could easily do without 40.

They are all decent, but having a 9mm and 45ACP, I see no need for the 40SW. However, the 10mm is pretty useful.

This phrase is really getting old. Ballistically, it is about the same as a 45 with 185 gr load, and seeing mulitiple tests on gel with clothes, obstacle penetrations, etc, I see no weakness in it. I go strickly with 180 grain loads, the HST in particular, and find it little more recoil than 9mm, with more mass it it.

That is what a lot of people call it because they prefer the 10mm.

Or because it is funny. Rather like the .357 BS (Bottleneck SIG).

When I lived in Hawaii the SWAT guys had 40S&W Sigs, everyone else had 5906 9mm. I had a friend ask a SWAT guy why he carried a 40, he didn't know he was SWAT. The guy replied, "So I don't have to walk around everyday trying to convince everyone my 9mm is as powerful as a 40 or 45".

Isn't it funny that 357 and 40 guys never have to try and argue that their bullets have as much capability as a 9mm?

As I stated several years ago....the .40 S&W is a fad cartridge.

In the very near future people will come back to their senses and get something in a real pistol round........the .41 Action Express!!!

Nope, don't own anything in the .40, but just because I've got it pretty well bracketed with other loadings.

In .40 Smith, a 125g Barnes Tac-XP (all copper boolit, about same displacement as a 170-180g lead bullet in the case) with 8.4g. of Power Pistol will hit 1320-1330+fps, and deliver it accurately down range. Decent piggy thumper. In 10mm it'll hit 1500+, of course, with two more grains of the same powder. With that large large bearing surface on the rifling, these long bullets really deliver the goods accurately in the .40. No, I don't work for Barnes. But I'm willing to learn...

To paraphrase what Mao said about the French Revolution, it is too soon to tell. It's not 100 years old, yet. Give it time.
