Hate is such a strong word.
Can't we use dislike instead?
My USP 40 is about the best shooting handgun I have out of the multiple caliber pistols I own. Loaded with Gold Dots I feel this is my go to pistol.

They look at it as;
Not as much capacity as the 9mm and not as much power as the .45
I look at it as;
More capacity than the .45 and more power than the 9
I like it just fine.
AND... I've always found some flavor of .40 on the shelves of my LGS. Can't say that for any other handgun round.
The size of the weapon is just better for ME than the full sized Glocks. But I've got a G21 just cause I have a large amount of .45 in the closet. When the stash is gone I could very well go all .40.

I've noticed a similar disdain for the 45 GAP
I like the 40; recoil is load dependent and many are very manageable, plus its bigger than 9mm.

It is a good round, but its not my preference. I'd rather have the couple of extra rounds and reduced recoil of a 9mm. I am issued a .40 for work and mandated to carry it on duty. Over the years I have learned to shoot it well and trust that it is a decent round, but I would still pick something else if given the choice. I carry a 9mm off duty and have a .45 in the nightstand for HD.

Some folks seem to have to justify their purchases by convincing themselves they bought the absolute best and there is no other intelligent option.

I don't hate the 40 but have given up on it. It is a very capable round but I can get that capability elsewhere. I don't care for the snappy recoil and wrist twisting at my age. Funny thing is I can shoot the 45 just fine and will stick with it.

That is why when I see any 9mm 115gr JHP +p+ loads at a gun show here in Northern, New England, I don't hesitate to buy it. It is the best 9mm SD round on the market.

they should not hate the .40, its "misunderstood". I like that it is usually available when other pistol calibers are out.

Heck most calibers are unnecessary.

With a .22lr, 9mm .243, .375, and a 12 GA you can do anything a firearm needs to do.

But how boring would it be if those were the only calibers we could have?

The .40 is a comprise round and in this case does a lot of things very well.

In a full size gun, I love the 40; more rounds than a 45 & bigger hole than a 9mm. That is the problem though, in a full size gun, I would rather have a 45, especially in 10+1 cap or fewer states. My XD45C is the same size as my G32, still 10+1 here, so I go 45. In a subcomp, I would rather have a 9mm. My G26 is far easier to shoot than the G27 IMO. So while I own 40s, not my fav, mostly due to the other caliber options.

Seeing as how one police chief convinced the town council that the US military had adopted the 40 S&W, at least he thinks so,they are now switching to 9 mm. I kid you not.

Georgia police chief claims his force has to switch to 9mm handguns… because U.S. military switched to .40?

Yet once again a politician is making choices for his troops. The avg LEC knows little to nothing about guns or ammo.

I wonder how many have loved/hated a caliber when it was really more about the platform... For ex: a G26 is great, but a G27, some say not so much. G19 vs. G23, similar but to a lesser degree. Now compare the G26 to a G22 (or even a USP in .40)
