Jamaican Bobsled Team

For those who have watched the Olympics - do the sides of the Jamaican Bobsled Team's helmets look like what I think they look like?

Not trying to be a racist, but I could swear they look like a watermelon to me. It would not surprise me - that team seems to have a pretty good sense of humor.

Why are we so brainwashed into thinking trusting our own eyes is racist?

That's clearly watermelon hull painted on their helmets.

ETA: And after thinking on it a little, I've decided that's why they did it. They'll get a kick out of having watermelon helmets and the media being too scared to be labeled racist to say anything about it. Pretty funny actually.

With all of the fancy graphics they have nowadays I was not sure what it was. But I knew what it looked like.

Did anyone catch their second run where the dude went with a broken visor? Get some duct tape man!

The whole "racist" thing is so overplayed as to be meaningless.

Isn't everything racist these days...

Maybe the white teams should have painted their helmets to look like Mayonnaise?

As someone who appreciates all types of humor including race based jokes lets be honest...that s*** is funny.

Hahaha! I haven't seen their helmets until this, although I saw an interview with one of the team members who seemed like a super cool guy. It wouldn't surprise me a bit to learn that they did it in good humor (of which the "Race" issue needs so much more).

IOC rejected their first helmet design.

I love the tweet that says the watermelon helmets may be a little racist. Really? So is this twit suggesting that the Jamaicans are racist? My guess is that they had at least SOME input into the helmets. Sheesh! Some people need to stop looking to be offended.

And yet the IOC would not let the Winter Olympic athletes have a sticker on their helmet honoring a fellow skier ( Sarah Burke) who died from a brain injury and heart attack because of an accident in ski half-pipe practice. The IOC said it was "a political statement".

You wouldn't be racist, you would be stereotyping at worst.

If you weren't sure, and assumed it was a watermelon because they were black, then yes. From the still pictures it seems pretty obvious it's supposed to be a watermelon. Not sure how easy it was to tell on video. That's also why I added "at worst."

I'm not sure if that is a stereotype in Jamaica or not. To me, I just think of those "this could be your head" videos where they smash a watermelon in place of someone's head. The watermelon sort of symbolizes the head, so why not put it on a helmet?
