Drugs, booze and poor decisions. With a small percentage of people who had some crap luck. The ones I deal with on a daily basis are all substance abusers. They get booted out of a house for drinking, drugs, stealing etc..........They hit the streets doing more drinking and drugs, stumble into the street and get drilled by a car or get rolled for their money and KO'd. Now they have a history of seizures due to the head injury, a mental illness history due to the drugs and cycle just repeats over and over. Seizures, assaults, drunks falling down, over and over and over. All day all night.

Substance abuse and mental illness is the cause the vast majority of the time. Many, especially the seriously mentally ill, receive disability benefits that are sufficient to live a life off the streets. They choose not to.

Drug and alcohol problems are of course very prevalent, but I think that most of those people have mental issues and would still be on the streets even if drugs/alcohol never existed.

^^This.
My wife volunteered at a resource center for the homeless, a while back.
Many of the folks coming through said they were homeless because they wanted to be. They liked "being off the grid" along with the above reasons.

I've got a plan for if I ever "lose it all." I'm getting over to the west coast of FL on one of the tourist islands, I'll find a job at whatever little bar or convenience store is hiring and I'm renting one of those cheap little waterfont shacks or trailers to live in. I'll stay boozed up and in the company of tourist chicks until I get my act together...if I still want to at that point.

I think about that everytime I'm over there.

its causes and effects which are different case to case .
you could write down a ton of reasons and then there would be more reasons. it really is case by case / you cant lump it all in one

There's a difference between being homeless for a short period of time once in your life due to a personal financial crunch and being permanently or chronically homeless. Temporary homelessness can be dealt with as long as the individual involved recognizes the precariousness of his position and makes sacrifices to get past it. It's a fairly large bump in the road, but it can be overcome in a (relatively) short amount of time.

Chronic homelessness is, in my experience, primarily due to the person being mentally disturbed and/ or addicted to drugs/ alcohol. Those situations almost never get fixed.

That is not true. After Viet Nam that same story went around and during the Clinton administration that was popular. Finally there was some research done and it was found the percentage of homeless vets was just about the same as the general population. Liberals love to tell stories about homeless women, children and veterans.

Wait, so I have young children and will turn 60 before they turn 18, that means I can start getting SSI checks? Cool. I will have to check on that in a few years.

Most people will say that they "chose" something instead of settled for (or were forced into) it, regardless of the subject matter.

Mental illness is a major factor in homelessness.

Before 1968 there were no homeless. Those that were mentally ill were institutionalized in sanitariums. Thus no 'street people'.

There were always railroad bums, they were the urban mountain-men of a sort.

Chronic substance and alcohol abuse will cause you to lose a job and thus your place to live.

There are always shelters for women and kids, not so for men.

While some people do choose it, just like some people want to be in jail....most of the people who say they "choose" the homeless lifestyle have "choosen" it because that sounds a lot better than "I failed and suck at life...."

People justify things. It is an instinct and even moreso for a person who has proven they lack personal responsibility and discipline.
