Prominent physicians Freud and Halsted tried to get rid of their cocaine addictions with the use of opium/morphine.

Western Europe would have a distinctly Asian flavor and full of Mongolian barbecue joints if not for the the death of one man, Ogedei Khan. The Mongol armies had to be recalled back home as they were poised to attack the rest of Europe. No standing Russian, Arab, European, and Asian army at the time can stand against the Mongols.

The .45 ACP was developed to kill Filipinos... More myth than fact probably but the American army needed a better round to put down the Moros in Southern Philippines. These warriors would wade and hack through American troops and absorbed multiple .38 caliber rounds before going down.

Yut.

In 1907, for an ad campaign, women were offered a free box of Kellogg's Corn Flakes cereal for winking at the grocer. At the time, the company was called the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company.

In a study that was done by the University of Chicago in 1907, it was concluded that the easiest color to spot is yellow. This is why John Hertz, who is the founder of the Yellow Cab Company picked cabs to be yellow.

In the late 1960's, Mountain Dew bottles featured a hillbilly on them. These are now collector items worth five to ten dollars.

Ray Kroc bought McDonalds for $2.7 million in 1961 from the McDonald brothers.

The first domain name ever registered was Symbolics.com.

The Nike swoosh was invented by Caroline Davidson back in 1971. She received $35 for making the swoosh. The first shoe with the swoosh was introduced in 1972.

The reason the Animal Crackers box is designed with a string handle is because when the popular circus theme was introduced in 1902 they thought it would also be a good idea to package them with a string as a Christmas novelty so they could be hung from Christmas trees.

Undertakers report that human bodies do not deteriorate as quickly as they used to. The reason for this, they believe, is that the modern diet contains so many preservatives that these chemicals tend to prevent the body from decomposing too quickly after death.

Benjamin Franklin was America's first political cartoonist. His drawing of a snake divided into eight parts was published in Philadelphia in 1754.

It is possible to drown and not die. Technically the term “drowning” refers to the process of taking water into the lungs, not to death caused by the process.

According to Time magazine (August 6, 1951), the following rule of thumb can be used to determine whether victims of radiation poisoning will live or die:

1.All those who do not vomit after contamination will live.

2.Those who vomit for an extended period of time will probably die.

3.Half of those who stop vomiting within a few hours will probably live

Yup. Good luck with that.....

Before 1859 baseball umpires sat in a padded rocking chair behind the catcher.

The reason the Animal Crackers box is designed with a string handle is because when the popular circus theme was introduced in 1902 they thought it would also be a good idea to package them with a string as a Christmas novelty so they could be hung from Christmas trees.

A total of 63 errors were made in the 1886 World Series.

Richard Milhouse Nixon was the first US President whose name contains all the letters from the word "criminal". William Jefferson Clinton is the 2nd.

Reportedly, there are more than 1,750 "O's" in a 15-ounce can of SpaghettiOs.

At Disneyland they have hundreds of wild domesticated cats running around the park. They never come out during the day because there's too many people, but the reason they're there is to catch the mice.

Charlie Brown's father was a barber.

Cold pizza is fairly popular. A survey found 15 percent actually PREFER pizza this way, suggesting that the number who love hot pizza but don't mind eating the leftovers cold the next day must be quite high indeed.

In the United States, more than 25 percent of women's fashion dollars are spent on sizes 16 and up.

A #12 pitch is the same thing as a 45* angle.

When framing on center the first measurement is always 3/4" less than the center mark. Example: for 16" centers your first measurement is 15 1/4", then pull 16" for the remaining studs.

Nails were originally named according to how many pennies they weighed. So a 16 penny nail is equal to the weight of 16 pennies.

WWII info:

Savage contracted under the Lend/Lease act to build No. 4 MK 1 rifles. Every rifle received from Savage was closely inspected by British proof houses before the rifle went into military service. The rifles produced by Savage were of such high quality not a single one was rejected. In fact they proved to be of better quality than their British built counterparts.

The rarest 1911 produced during WWII were made by the Singer Sewing Machine company. They were assembled so well and of such quality that the military provided them to other manufactures as examples.

Ford had plants in the US and Germany and build vehicles for both sides. Henry Ford threatened to stop producing vehicles for the US war effort unless the US Army stopped bombing runs near his plants in Germany.

There were 1,600,000 casualties at the Battle of Stalingrad.

From 1940-1945, the U.S. defense budget increased form $1.9 billion to $59.8 billion.

Probably not the ONLY thing that had a spike in sales today. I'm guessing purveyors of alcoholic beverages are also having good fortune.

Ninety percent of U.S. households have at lease one remote control for the television; 8 out of 10 report losing it.

Each year approximately 250,000 American husbands are physically attacked and beaten by their wives.

Two out of three adults in the United States have hemorrhoids.

Over 15 billion prizes have been given away in Cracker Jacks boxes.

In 1790, the U.S. government conducted its first head count. The total population was just under four million (3,929,625).

Horatio Nelson, one of England's most illustrious admirals was throughout his life, never able to find a cure for his sea-sickness.

In the U.S.A over eleven thousand people (up until the end of 2003) have visited a tortilla chip that appears to have the face of Jesus Christ burned into it.

Abraham Lincoln's mother died when she drank the milk of a cow that grazed on poisonous snakeroot.

The first known contraceptive was crocodile dung, used by Egyptians in 2000 B.C.

Less than one percent of people who entered Germany's Auschwitz concentration camp survived, after being liberated by the Russians in 1945.

Took me a second on that first one. Then I got it. I was trying to relate it to the first.

I dunno if it still is true, but at least thru the 80's, framing hammers were 16" long.

Penny nails - denoted by a D. Bleeping English!

In 1386, a pig was executed by public hanging for the murder of a child.

Barbie's full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts.

The citrus soda 7-UP was created in 1929; '7' was selected after the original 7-ounce containers and 'UP' for the direction of the bubbles.

To escape the grip of a crocodile's jaws, push your thumbs into its eyeballs - it will let you go instantly.

Crocodiles and alligators are surprisingly fast on land. Although they are rapid, they are not agile. So, if being chased by one, run in a zigzag line to lose him or her.

The word "samba" means "to rub navels together."

I don't know about the octotroph thing. I think that's more, an assumed name in certain circles of telephony and maybe general technology. I'm pretty sure that that symbol was around well before the word octotroph came about.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
