Halfway point of a diet sucks

193.6, only lost .6 pounds from last week. Down from 225, but want to go to 165. Halfway point. 31.4 lost, 28.6 to go. But still, it is roughly 30 pounds to go.

We were going to have some guests over, so my wife bought some snacks including salted almonds. Guests had a last minute cancel, so guess who had some almonds? I ate too many dates and almonds. While paleo friendly, salted nuts are the devil.

Thanksgiving is coming up. That will be tough for a diet. I'd love to drop just a hair into the 180's before then. That would be a big ego boost, but I don't know if I can do it.

At 193 or 194, I'm at the weight I was 15 or 20 years ago when I was a ski instructor. I'm back to being more fit. I feel younger. I can run 3 miles non-stop. I'm not as winded in soccer. I can hike a mountain. Those are all good things, but dangerous in that I can't get complacent about the diet now.

Thoughts of ice cream, pizza, wings, soda, beer, chips. Maybe I'm picturing myself sitting in a bar after skiing, drinking beer and ordering wings. I'm young, I'm healthy, I can do that.

If I do, the weight won't stay off and will come back fast. It will be an avalanche of pounds, overtaking and burying me.

I can't eat like I was 30 anymore. I have to eat like the 50 that I am approaching. Drinking water now, and knowing if I eat even too many almonds and dates I'll get fat.

Dieting and training for my own 5k's are hobbies. My 3 mile time went from 35 minutes down to 34:30 this week. Lousy times that mean nothing to nobody but me. How can I get my weight into the 180's before Thanksgiving, and how can I drop my 3 mile time below 30 minutes?

Those are my personal goals now. Is everyone this obsessive compulsive about their hobbies?

Balance is key to contentment. It's tough to find sometimes.

Balance or compromise?

Single minded purpose has to take me to 165. And then I have to stay there. All foods, all pleasures, are given up if they interfere with that. I gave fat a chance. I was relaxed and easy going about it, and then it overtook me. No more! No compromising with fat.

If I'd taken daily decimals into consideration while dropping some lbs, would likely go nuts. Been staying off the scale except for every week or two, helps to see more dramatic (if even by a few lbs difference) in the right direction. About 20 away from goal at this point, and expect it will take a couple months to make it last. Focus on long term changes, eating habits, and don't entirely deprive myself of the things I like to eat most. An exception or two is made on weekends. That way, I can come out on the light side, without hating what it took to get there.

I eat a salted almonds quite often. They are fine. Sometimes it's all I have for "lunch", a handful of almonds. My wife buys them raw, roasts them, and then coats them in ancho or passilla chile powder and ultra fine sea salt. Delicious, nutritious, and diet-friendly.

The dates? No way, too much sugar for me.

Don't let half way be the end. Take Thansgiving off. But just that day.

Stop weighing yourself and when you're under your goal weight, you'll be extra surprised.

Everyone is different, I guess. That salt revs up my appetite, perhaps. I don't ever add salt to my food. Disclaimor: corn on the cob (which I haven't had in a few months).

I have been eating dates all along, without over doing it. But when mixed with salty almonds, it was all over

You are doing it wrong. Drink the beer first, then eat the wings. Finish off with a Coke, and a chocolate bar.

It's not the end. The just some good old fashioned belly aching!

I went out and ran a mile in 9:42 after breakfast, so I feel better now.

It's a marathon, not a sprint. It's about making long term lifestyle choices, not avoiding gorging on a few meals during the holidays.

A lifetime of avoiding gorging?

Half-way point implies the diet is going to end. In order to gain any lasting benefit you need to eat a diet you are able to continue long term. Otherwise you are just indulging in yo-yo dieting which means you are likely to end up fatter than when you started.

Maybe you ate just carrying extra water because of the salty snacks. How does your wedding ring fit today?

I've been floating between 191 and 194 for about 6 weeks.
Got on the scale today, 189.4. Progress.

I hate sticking points.

I'm doing a modified Atkins hitting 20 to 60 carbs a day.
I'm down 26 pounds from May.

For the holidays I'm going to allow myself 120 carbs per day
for those weeks. Not worth stressing over. Once they pass
I'm back on the wagon to 180

Stick with it!

All the Best,
D. White

Yo-yo diet is better than no-no diet

I'm half-way through the part of the diet where I am eating fewer calories than I burn.

The next diet after that matches colories eaten to calories burned.
