That's the way I read it too. I've eaten lunch and dinner many times armed with my CCW with cops at the next table. I would expect if I took gun in hand and faced them, I'd likely get aerated. Too many cops don't go home because they hesitated. I'll agree though that there are some hot headed cops that pose more of a danger than they prevent.

McCarthy needs to be careful. If he calls down the thunder, he may get it.

No, he said a lot more than that. The fact that one line of his tirade wasn't totally insane doesn't excuse the rest of it.

Chief Mc"shoot-the-streetlights-out"Carthy?

Do tell. Now, when facing a CPD Copper, one would of course want to ride wid da law not agin it. I think the good citizens need not fear too much from the checkered hat group on the streets... white shirts perhaps. Flash mobs for sure.

Oh heck, avoid Chicago totally unless you're one of those who loves taking risks or has business there. Why give Rahm tourism $ or take a chance shooting another human or twelve and/or getting ventilated in the process?

The rant was definitely unprofessional. He's the type of hot headed cop I refer to. He's more of a danger than a deterrent. Just the same, it's best to keep your hands exposed, empty and open when confronted by LE. He doesn't know if you're friend or foe and you don't know if he's sane or McCarthy.

Don't forget he may not represent the views of the rank and file. Didn't the CPD Lieutenants Association come out in favor of concealed carry a couple years back?

McJersey?

This is actually one of his more sane moments. Ever read about his off duty brawl with on duty troopers. He was allegedly drunk at the time. During the brawl his gun ended up getting thrown onto the front seat of his car for "safekeeping."

I wish we could kick the north east corner out of Illinois. Let them be there own utopia of high crime and restrictive gun laws. They could call it "Chicago Land" and it would be the happiest place on earth.

EDIT: Deleted because, like a Glock Talkers, I commented based mainly on what was said in the thread, before reading the guy's actual comments.

they gonna have to shoot better than many of the LEO I have shot with to hit ANYTHING they are "aiming" at..... is a legal carrying citizen being drawn/fired on by LE simply because he legally has a gun justified in returning fire?

I doubt there is any way you could win that.

I kinda get the feeling that if a permit holder did get shot by the police in his city, he wouldn't feel too bad about it.

Seriously, I think that what the "chief" said regarding this issue is some of the dumbest sh** I've ever heard.

Just as I suspected, OP was disingenuous at best.

“You put more guns on the street expect more shootings,” McCarthy said. “I don’t care if they’re licensed legal firearms, people who are not highly trained… putting guns in their hands is a recipe for disaster. So I’ll train our officers that there is a concealed carry law, but when somebody turns with a firearm in their hand the officer does not have an obligation to wait to get shot to return fire and we’re going to have tragedies as a result of that. I’m telling you right up front.”

The first half is the typical anti gun nonsense. The second half is the meat and potatoes- I'd expect all of the LEOs I work with to use force if necessary, even against a CCW holder.

Shoot, have at it. Every state should be shall issue and most folks I've come into contact with the novelty wears off after a few weeks/months of having a permit.
