We were so poor - if I wasn't a boy, I'd have had nothing to play with.

I also read the entire World Book Encyclopedia, but I was in the 7th grade.

There is an excellent little book called: Where Did You Go? Out. What Did You Do? Nothing. It was written in 1957. It is still availiable on Amazon. It is mainly about what kids did and made by themselves outside. Very cool.

We did not watch TV at all, except for Saturday morning. Fury, Circus Boy, Sky King and the like. I was in college before my parents got a color TV.

A vacant lot was our paradise. Forts were built and clod fights were held. Since I grew up in West Texas, our vacant lots did not have trees. Our forts started with a hole in the ground that we dug.

You're weird. Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that, but it's true.

Not to worry. I've still got all my own teeth.

Judging from your spelling skills, I doubt you can say the same.

I'll chew my own prunes thank you.

Juice is for kids. You mix it with water and put it in a bottle with a nipple on it so they don't make a mess while they tickle themselves.

Big deal, when you were in 7th grade it only had 4 volumes.

Oh yeah, on Saturdays, and maybe Sundays too (can't recall about Sunday), some of us would be inside during daylight hours to watch the stock car races, which nowadays are known as NASCAR.

After reading the entire thread, watching stock car racing on TV is the only time I remember being indoors weather providing... and a lot of times we were out in some seriously nasty weather as well, which in hindsight was just plain stupid here in Florida.

Put a gazillion miles or more on a big, green, single speed Schwinn bike back in my day too. I guess today it would be called a "Cruiser." It seemed my friends always got to where we were going faster than I did on their fancy-smancy, multi-speed bikes, well, EXCEPT when there was a dirt road and it hadn't rained in a while. That old Schwinn was a beast in the dirt and sand.

ETA: The handle bars were big and comfortable enough that girls could ride with me for a "coke date*" to the back store or under the highway overpass.

"I own a 3,000 sq ft. home and sleep in a lean to outside a good bit of the time."

You don't like looking at the stars? As kids we'd always take a rope and fly, but we wouldn't string it up until it rained. That was mostly to protect our BB guns and .22 rifles. I was fortunate growing up like that and had a big head start on camping and so-called survivor skills when I joined a scout troop in the city.

No!!! In a survival situation I don't care about sight seeing. I 'm always preparing for the end times.
