Deliberate attempt to kill truck drivers?

Has this municipality deliberately constructed a trap to kill truck drivers? Or is the town council simply stupid?

http://jalopnik.com/i-cant-stop-watc...ium=socialflow

The local politicians should be jailed!

If there's a sign then its all idiot drivers. There's a 12' bridge in the city I live near and once a quarter or so some idiot who can't read puts his truck into the bridge.

Should have seen me taking the bus at work through a drive through at the bank. I made it through without scraping anything, but I had to exhale to do it.

I see plain signage,a flashing light, and everything else required to warn truck drivers.

I see a large number of those are rental moving vans...

It's not as bad as it looks; some of those came really close to getting through.

They were near misses, they nearly missed that bridge.

If a truck driver does not know what 11' 8" means he shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel of a moped.

Sign said clearance to the twelve-foot line, but the chickens were stacked to thirteen, nine.

I always thought the bridge height was more of a suggestion really. Like speed limits. And one way streets.

If I remember correctly, low clearance was covered in basic CDL testing.

How old do you figure the bridge is? Is it possible that it has been there for years or even decades?

And as asked if there really is a deliberate effort to provide the (more than) ample humor that the bridge provides would they really use all those signs? Would they not at least turn the flashing warning lights off if it were a trap?

The bridge is 11'8" tall, it very clearly says that, and usually there are other signs and flashing lights alerting people that a bridge is low. There are usually signs a quarter mile back saying a low bridge, and instructing trucks where the detour is. It's a train bridge, they can't raise the bridge because the train's path needs to be as level as possible. And lowering the road would be extremely expensive and time consuming, and could shut down the road for over a year or more.

Stupid drivers are being stupid, nothing stupid about the politicians or municipality.

Those railroad bridges are tough.

I bet that one was built before World War I.

No cheap solution to this problem other than 11-08 means 11-08.

How can you seriously blame the town council?

Quote:
Why is the bridge so low?

This train trestle is about 100 years old. At the time when it was built, there were no standards for minimum clearance..

Why don’t they fix it?

Depends on who “they” are and on what “fix” means.
  • Norfolk Southern Railroad owns the train trestle, and their concern is primarily with keeping the trains running and keeping them running safely. So their concern is mainly with reducing the impact of the truck crashes on the actual structure of the train trestle. As far as they are concerned, they solved that problem by installing the crash beam.
  • The city of Durham has installed “low clearance” signs on each of the 3 blocks leading up to the trestle (Gregson is a one-way road). There is an “overheight when flashing” sign with flashing lights that are triggered by vehicles that are too tall. Several blocks ahead of the trestle the speed limit is 25 MPH. The folks from the city planning department said that they made an effort to prevent accidents.
  • The North Carolina Dept. of Transportation maintains the road, but not the signage. I suspect they have much bigger problems to deal with statewide than this bridge.

The local politicians should be jailed!

Why? Because drivers are far too stupid to be expected to drive responsibly?

Yes, but is the clearance really, 11'8" or was that the clearance a 100 years ago and 3 pavings of the road ago. So now the trestle has settle 6" and the road is 6" thicker and the clearance is now really 10'8"

They probably own the wreck website, and are getting advertising money for views!

Some drivers just do not pay attention.

How stupid do you have to be to think that was deliberately put there by the sitting town council to hurt someone driving a larger vehicle... it was there before most of the yahoos driving those trucks were born!

I liked the guy hauling hay, knocked his off and the guy hauling hay right behind him did the same thing after watching the guy in front of him hit it.
