I also see evidence that gold is being used in electronics in ever increasing amounts, which makes it partially an industrial metal. There is enough gold that some people recycle PCBAs just to recover the gold in the boards and parts.
Understood.

I however have stated repeatedly that I make no predictions regarding the future price of gold.

Gold is in fact essential for making most microprocessors.
The properties of gold which make it essential are its unique combination of: high conductivity + resistance to corrosion + ductility + maleability.

No other material on earth posseses this combination of properties.

Gold is also essential to much ultra-high precision equipment required for not only the semiconductor manufacturing process but also many scientific instruments.

Without gold we could have no internet, no high-speed/high-density computers, no mobile phones-in-a-pocket, etc.

Many of our present-day high-tech medical equipment and systems would not be possible.

I seem to recall that you are an EE, yes?
Do you agree with the above?

I am an EE, and I agree. I am also aware of two initiatives that would reduce the amount of gold used in semiconductor bond wires and in another arena.

Several (very) smart folks here at GT have argued that gold is used only because its currently the most expedient way to produce semiconductors. They've usually argued that to assert that we could not have modern electronics without gold is stupid.

You know though that if a material could be found to eliminate gold from electronic components the folks at Intel, Phillips, Toshiba, AMD, Sony, Siemens, etc. would be all over it.
They tend to employ some really, really smart people for their research and they have every motivation to leave gold behind in their business.
Huge motivation.

Sure they've been trying..
And perhaps in the future nano-materials may be the answer, or some new unobtainium...

Hasn't happened yet.
The modern world simply could not exist without gold.

Gold is in HUGE demand right now... so how come the price of gold is not already through the roof?

Because nobody has enough money to buy it.

BAMMM!!!

So, what are people doing instead? They are calling in their vouchers and cashing in their chips. Venezuela already called for all their gold reserves held in the US. Germany called for theirs and were told "No."... that they couldn't have it. Why? Maybe because it's not there so it can't be sent to them.

Gold is not going up to $55k per ounce unless the dollar becomes so devalued that it takes a wheel barrel full to buy a loaf of bread... which... is possible.

Anyway, pretty much the whole world is bankrupt now and the values of currencies are not really what they seem. Prepare for the second crashing of the economy. If it doesn't happen, great!

Unfortunately true. Plus they could liberate it from private ownership more efficiently today.

This link shows graphs of how the dollar has lost purchasing power since Nixon closed the gold window.

Just further proof that the US dollar fails as both medium of exchange and store of value. That is why we will get freegold at $55,000. The world is sick of holding ever inflating dollars that purchase less and less every year.

If you're referring to FDR, that was widely ignored and I don't think anyone was prosecuted for violating that law. You may as well try and ban chocolate chip cookies. Would anyone here give up their gold, or guns?

Yet some think that trend won't continue. Maybe they think Obama is going to fix everything.

Great article about gold, silver, and ever disappearing purchasing power of the US dollar.

Some further education for those with the ability to see outside their dogmatic normalcy bias.

Quote:
What IS desperately needed, however, is a universally respected reserve asset capable of filling our current void with a reliable presence that serves as a store of value. And far from needing to be conjured or created by complex international committees, that asset is already in existence and held in goodly store by central bankers and prudent individuals around the world — it’s known as gold.

The point is, once "Freegold" (nature's wrath) inflicts itself upon us all, it won't really matter what is chosen/used as the super-sovereign or supra-national currency to lubricate international trade. It could be the euro, the yuan, the SDR, Facebook Credits or even the dollar! Triffin's dilemma will be gone. And you shouldn't worry so much over the transactional currency question, because that will be chosen through the market forces of regression, the network effect and game theory's focal point discovery at the international level.
Remember boys and girls, Freegold is free floating gold around $55,000 per ounce.

How much closer are we to that $55k/oz now?

So the question is Glocktalkers, will you decide to be smart money?

I wonder if other stuff would make me happier than a pile of yellow metal?

You mean like caring for my family?
Sending my kids to college?
Helping my grandkids get through college?
Contributing to, and putting a balanced portfolio together to live on and enjoy life when my wife and I are retired?
Buying undeveloped land for my future heirs and generations?

You mean stuff like that?
Those things make me happy.

That's just plain silly. What would really make you happy is stockpiling a semi-scarce commodity of limited utility value.

Yes, exactly. Minus the kids and future generations part.
