there is a big big difference in hard rock culture and this type of thug culture , further more back when i was in school you act like these kids in these commericals you would get your ass kicked , now you would get shot .
Remember when Ozzy and Ronnie James Dio got in that shoot out with each other? All those Rock stars killing each other back in the day. <sarcasm

Really?
What about the suicides by Ozzie fans? What about the murder of Elyse Pahler by Slayer fans?

As to when you were in school, urban homicides peaked at their highest in 1980 until around 1990.Hip hop wasn't know hardly at all outside on NY,but cities were much more dangerous back then.

....and yes, me calling Will a thug was a joke.

On a serious note though. This is one of the few commercials I have ever seen that did actually bug me. They had kids rapping in ghetto slang and dancing like some skank at a club. At least Will Smith(from the video posted) raps in proper English.
I like a decent amount of rap music, but I don't like this because it was done by, and directed at little kids.
It of course is their freedom of speech to do whatever they want, but it is also ours to say we think it is dumb or bad.

It's easy to see the direction of the youth in this country. Although some seem to be wearing blinders.

Nicely put. Thanks for applying common sense.

I never intended for this thread to devolve into a 'who hates rap?' rant. My point is that encouraging kids of that age to embrace urban thug culture is irresponsible at best.

I suspect parents of young children tend to sugar coat what they see in those Kmart ads because they're afraid of the reality. As soon as they admit that it's wrong, they'll have to deal with it, and most cannot.

They don't sell ammunition due to 2 white kids who listened to Marylin Manson (not that it matters), and shot up a school.

I hate rap, more of a headbanger myself.

But what is the big uproar here? And what's your solution? Have .gov take it off the air? In the name of "morality? Liberals cry and whine about **** they don't like and so do conservatives. Grow a pair, accept the differences in society, and leave people alone.

Judging by the absolute ****hole appearance of the those I've visited in the last few years, and the rate at which they're closing, they need to draw in a new customer base. This one ain't working for 'em.

As far as the kids in the video being in an after school program that keeps them from being actual gangsta thugs, good for them and the program. My problem lies with the lazy ebonic thug speech. Work in an English and spelling lesson somewhere.

There is very little effort by many in urban areas to learn the language they are butchering wif dem turribul werds dey be yuzin daylee. Hows wuld yew liyk it iff erebowdy bee speekin und ritin liyk dis heer? Dont dis garbij get on yo nirvs? If K mart wants to perpetuate this crap with it's ads and help make another generation of kids think it's ok to speak like that, they can fade into oblivion and I wont miss them one bit.

They don't sell guns and ammo anymore because Michael Moore brow beat a weak kneed sorry excuse of a CEO into making a chicken***t decision just before drove the company into near bankruptcy.

Please show me where a girl is "dancing like some skank at a club". I must have missed it. The other posters have not shown me where the violence, sex, or drug use is in the video. Please point it out. Give me a minute mark so I can see what you are addressing.

As far as ghetto slang, I guess none of y'all are from the south? If you spoke with these kids they just might surprise you with how they speak and write.

I think you summed it up best in your opening paragraph to this thread; your opinion is somewhat 'less qualified'. I failed to see how these 2 videos/K-Mart ads equate to embracement of urban thug culture.

I am a parent and grandparent of children this age and while I personally abhor the degenerative nature of much of today's rap music, I failed to make the connection your op alludes to.

As far as rap music being a perversion of the English language ... 1) I'm sure the Brits would have something to say about that, and 2) and I quote, 'O'er the ramparts we watched' ... 'O'er the land of the free' ... What part of English is that?

The scene showing one of them holding a gun sideways and using the "B"word ended up on the cutting room floor.

People, it's just business...they found out that selling gangsta stuff is profitable, and they no doubt did some studies that show this crap sells....

That said, when corporate America gloms onto the current trends, and then sells the shtuff, it ain't long before the next new shiny 'thing' comes into view....and the gangsta style crap will then disappear from the land-scape, so be happy they are on it....

Same happens all the time, example : bell-bottom jeans

Now, I hope they start the kids on showing their arses with pants that are around the ankles...

Then THAT trend may finally die the death it deserves...

I am out....capitalism ain't all that strange...
