Upcoming Vacation: Orlando, Then the Gulf Coast

Two wonderful weeks with the fam in sunny Florida coming up. Week one will be Orlando and the mouse, and week two will be a small beach town in Sarasota. It'll be me, the wife and our two school-age kids.

In addition to Disney for two days, we are doing a day at Legoland. Any 'gotta do'-s for while we are there?? Either to see or to eat? All suggestions welcome.

I go here a lot when I'm there.

Citywalk is nice too, I don't like NBA City or NASCAR Cafe but pretty much anything else is palatable.

Unless your kids are really young, I would suggest passing up Legoland. We took our boys when they just opened up and it was an expensive 4 hours even with the buy one get one free tickets.

I'd save the $$ until you get to Anna Maria Island.

oh yea, what he said, it's geared towards I think 8 and under. If you go to Epcot the steak place in Canada is great but it's the most expensive restaurant in all of Disney. (wish I knew that going in)

Thanks for the eats, I am taking notes.

Re: LEGOLAND, yeah the kids are pretty young, and love those little plastic terrors that I always manage to step on when walking around in my bare feet.

Oh well, the spousal unit picked up the tickets for it already so whadamIgonnado?

Have fun! I must confess that the mouse and I have a long relationship. To the point we drank the DVC kool-aide.

But Orlando in summer? No way. Not for this Northwesterner.

Narcoosees at the Grand Floridian. I always get the surf and turf and have never been disappointed. Check the times, if you time it right, you can also see the fireworks over the Magic Kingdom from the Grand Floridian as well.

Be prepared for all the strollers, handicap scooters, walkers etc. And to be the only English speaking people there.
Was last there in January 2012. Burned slam up in January. Summer temps will be tough. Drink lots of water.

Thanks. We go to Florida every year around this time (just not Disney) so the heat is something we are used to.

Too young for the Kennedy Space Center? Will that be near your travels? I like that, but I'm a space geek. I would have loved that as a school age kid.

There's also the Kel-Tec factory...

I happened to have one of the P11s when they had the extractor problems. We happened to stay overnight in Cocoa Fl on the way to tour the space center. I looked up KT on the web to see if it was close enough to drop off the pistol for service, saw it was in Cocoa, FL. Thought.... hmmm, why does that sound familiar. I grabbed the hotel notepad to write down the address/phone#, and noticed the hotel was in.... Cocoa, FL.

So woke up early, drove around the corner, they fixed it while I waited, gave me a couple extra (extractors, not P11's... ) for my trouble. Got back to the hotel before the wife woke up.

Randy

Actually Kennedy is something I've always wanted to do, but it's not going to happen this go around. My son is 12 and is still more into 'pretend' space (Star Wars, etc.) than 'real' space. I'm also a little disappointed that the shuttle is no longer flying.

We like to go to Fl every year so it is on the list, though.

Mexican pavilion at Epcot. Cool restaurant inside and a tequila bar! The buffett at Germany is good too.

Kona restaurant at the Polynesian is good.

We've also drank the DVC koolaid and go down every year. We stay at the Bay Lake Tower at the Contemporary. The rooftop lounge is great for the Magic Kingdom fireworks.

When we've gone this time of year in the past, there's always been the large tour groups (sometime 30-50 deep) from south america.

LEGOLAND was great for the kids. We are trying out the waterpark next week. It was par of the annual pass, which was just 10 more than the day tickets for us Floridians.

Dixie Crossroads in Titusville has a way with seafood that will make the trip worthwhile if your out that way.

Used to make the trip from Orlando to there a few times a month when we lived there and it was always worth the drive.

I know you said your little ones may not be real into the space center but it sure is awe inspiring to see the story of space travel from day one.

Where every you roam though make sure you keep everyone hydrated and watch the little guys for signs of heat problems. It can get dang hot there and the little ones can get in trouble and not even know it when their excited.

We bought into the BLT. I want to stay there next time.

The last time we were at MK, there was a large group of Brazilian teenagers chaperoned by older minders. Nice kids, a bit teenagerish but no different than any American school group. Sad to say but the worst group at that time was the orthodox Jews who were there on break. Many of them embarassed me with their attitudes and actions.
