Hog Hunting

School me on hog hunting. A buddy and I want to go, he is a seasoned deer hunter and I have no experience. I'm thinking about taking the AR or the 12ga with ghost rings and slugs and a G22 as a back up just in case. He was recommended a .22 and shoot the sweet spot behind the ear. I'm thinking that wont do the job but I have no knowledge in this area. Any info from GT hunters is appreciated. We already have an area we are clear to use. Were in FL for reference.

if you can hunt over a bait pile that will help,
if not I like to stalk listen move very slow,
I would not use a 22 ever.
here is my hog hunt last November got these two stalking bot shot about a second apart both running from me both shot in the shoulder instant one shot drop. range 25 yards

Only thing I'll say is if they have small pigs, use caution.

They can be very vicious when young pigs are around.

I use my hog rifle with Hornady .223 75gr BTHP ammo.

YMMV

Out of the choices you listed, take the AR. You can kill them with a .22lr, but shot placement is key. This even applies to the AR. If you are hunting for meat, I would take something that hits harder. I use a .30-06 when I am hunting for meat. When I am hunting to eradicate and don't care if they drop dead or run off to die later, I use the AR. I've also used the .17HMR, but shot placement is key again.

When we(my father and I) go we use 30-30 and up for rifle and .40 S&W and up for handgun. Hogs are insanely tough animals. While a .22 will work on just about anything if the shots are right, I wouldn't be caught dead with anything less than .40 S&W.

My dad emptied his then 15 round p226 9mm with Federal HST's into our first hog... Had to have it's throat cut to end it's life...It was obviously crying the whole time and is by far one of the worst experiences of my life.

A 12ga will work, but it will destroy a lot of meat and has the potential to be insanely messy.

Where in FL are you going?

Were going to hunt for the meat so dropping them fast will be key. Now for placement are you going behind the ear or a heart lung shot? My options are limited so it's AR with hunting rounds or 12ga and buck maybe then? Were going on some piece of land out in the North Fl area I'm not sure yet where exactly. Also are is there a set number of rounds your allowed to carry when hunting with an AR or shotguns? The answers I found varied.

AR with heavy loads, or HP will work. Many folks shoot behind the shoulder, like a deer, but a hogs vitals are lower. Is your AR scoped? If so, go for the ear in my opinion. If you are shooting irons or red dot, I would go for the body. Just aim a bit lower than you would on a deer. Don't be surprised if it doesn't drop him dead in his tracks though! Some of those big boars are tough and seem like they refuse to die.

I would go with the AR if it's allowed.
We go with a guide, and I haven't heard them say anything about a round limit for anything. If you can, behind the ear is best, however that is not always easiest. Heart and lung is next best thing.

I missed this part...not in Texas, but don't know about Florida. Here, hogs are not a game animal, so there is no season, no limit, and no limit on the type of firearm.

AR with 30 round mag is common here, and fun.

I have had no problem using my G 20 and the first one was 350 and the second was just over 300. Both one shot and down. Just my .02

It does depend on how you are going to hunt them, which we didn't ask. I hunt them over bait, sitting back about 75 yards. This way they don't know what hit them and the animal does not have a big adrenaline dump...I think that is what causes folks to not care for the meat of the boar. I have a friend that hunts them with dogs and a knife and complains about the taste. Well, the dogs get them all worked up and you chase them all over the county before you kill them...I've shot big boars and they taste fine, but if I have my choice, I go for the smaller ones first.

You'll need a helicopter.

And camo.

Lots and lots of camo.

I want to try my STG-58 (FAL) on hogs. I think a .308 semi-auto would be perfect for that hunting.

Do you just need a general hunting license or are they open season there no matter what?

They just arrived here. Yay. So the game commission says you can hunt them whenever in certain areas but you had to have a generic hunting license for the season.

If it's He Season, you have to camouflage yourself appropriately, if you want a trophy.

Yes, we have to have valid hunting licenses here too. The state is always going to get their money!
