Tell him he has wrong apartment -> Grab gun -> Call police -> Lock bedroom door and wait for police to arrive, or the man to enter.

First, my home SD pistola would already be in hand before getting out of the bed to see about the door. Secondly, if the wife was home, she would already be calling 911; I'd announce they have the wrong residence......blood will spill if you continue to forcibly enter.

Hopefully, the perp would have a least one remaining functioning brain cell and they would leave; if not, then the outcome is predicted.

Immediately blow the claymores on the porch. Frags out all windows. Execute ninja flip out front door. Spin around in circles shooting everything.

This happened to me:

3 am ish. Young guy knocks on door and rings bell a bunch.
I had G19 in right hand behind door.
I had it in my hand because I did not yet have a holster that worked with my PJs.
I had cell in my left.
I opened the inner door.
Outer door was closed and is always locked.
He wanted to come in and use my phone.
I told him I will call the police and they would help him with whatever problem he was having.
At this he charged at the door but stopped short.
Then he swore a lot and took off running.
911 operator sent police.
She asked if there were any weapons. I said I was armed.
She said ok, please don't go outside.
I said yep, tell them as soon as I see their lights I will secure it.
Police showed up and searched around outside. (they were wearing hats - our chief is first rate)
Turns out it was a neighbor kid who got in some kind of family beef with his old man and tossed out for the night.
All's well that ends well.

I did not display my weapon.
I did not verbalize anything about it.
I should not have opened the door. That was dumb.
I should have just talked through the door or the nearby window.

Then yell through the door, "I'm on GlockTalk right now. Yall better run!"

This happened to my mom and little sister and I about 15 years ago. I was not a gun owner then. As the man of the house I instructed them to call the cops while I yelled at the drunks that they had the wrong home. When they persisted in banging on the door. We all armed ourselves with the longest knives that we had. Fortunately the drunks left. I'm confident that mom and little sis would have done what needed to be done. I saw the look in their eyes.

Today, if someone makes that mistake I'll grab one of the several guns that I have, while Ms. G22Dude gets baby G22Dude to the saferoom and calls the cops. I'll just lay in wait for the knucklehead to cross the threshold of our door and light them up.

1. I'm behind cover with my gun pointed at the door.

2. I'm dialing 911.

3. If he manages to bust down the door I let lead fly until the threat stops.

You know the eye peep hole in the front door? Well mine has a hookup for bear spray. Works great.

Simple, no?

Safest and easiest. Nothing to gain by confronting the dumb ass.
^ This, except the phone would be on hands-free. That way 9-1-1 also has the whole thing recorded. If he comes through the door, there'll be rounds downrange. He's not knowing I'm armed until then and by then he's got the point.

Aren't you concerned this might be considered brandishing?

If he wants to break down multiple doors because he is too drunk to realize he is lost then he just might get shot. In reality if he is that drunk it probably wont be necessary to shoot him. Simple takedown manuever or a frying pan upside the head would be enough.

Angry/drunk guy doesn't buy it, keeps pounding, yelling, and starts throwing his body against the door in an apparent attempt to break it in. You have a phone and a loaded gun nearby. What would you do? What order would you do it? Call 911? Grab gun first? Verbally warn the guy that you are armed?

This is based on a real scenario that happened to an aquaintance recently. I have my opinion; I'm interested in yours.
For starters, I don't answer the door or yell back anything at 4 AM.
I'll arm myself and prepare to repel borders.
If the door comes down?
Shots will be fired.

Then I'll call 911 to clean up the mess.

I have a security door (steel mesh) that opens out so it is easy to open my main door and have a conversation without letting someone in. If someone were trying to get through the security door I would slow down and grab something chambered in .223 and camp out at the top of the stairs.

The situation described by the OP really did happen to me once, except it was a gang of about 10 guys attacking 4 apartments at the same time.

There was no time to find my phone and cal 911. The door was about to be broken in, and would have been if I had not been pushing up against it from my side. My gun was (foolishly) locked in a safe at a friends house because I didn't have a safe of my own. I did the only option I had left. I bluffed. I opened the small window beside the door and told them I was a lot better armed than they were, (I don't know if they had any guns at all) and that if they force me to fire one shot, I'm coming outside and I'm not stopping until I've killed every one of them. I told them I'd shoot every one of them in the back as they try to run away. (again a bluff since you'd go to jail for that) The whole gang walked away without saying a word.

It was not a gun, but rather Arizona gun laws that saved myself and my neighbors that night, because even though I was bluffing and wasn't armed, the crooks knew we were in a state where it would be LEGAL for me to have the gun I'd need to back up the threats, so they walked away.

No one will ever force their way into my home without facing deadly force. I've run over this many times in my mind and I have no doubt.
I agree with most of this. I don't know if I would fire just because the door was breached. Gun would be aimed and ready to take him down. I'm not trigger happy.

I think I'm with BryanG above -- someone forcefully breaching my door definitely pushes my needle over into the "my life is in danger, NOW" zone, without doubt. And once they're in, don't assume that they're not necessarily coming at you instantly and that it won't take them about a second to get to you. I'm also not assuming that my first shot is going to stop them -- if i even hit them in a heated situation like that with my first shot -- nor maybe even the next four. And I'm not going to wait to find out. They're going down, period.
