One thing I don't understand is people literally putting a gun in the bed with the, under a pillow, etc.

I don't see the appeal. It seems dangerous both in the chances of an ND, and in the possibility that it might shift while you sleep and you won't even be able to reach it as quickly as if it was in a non-disturbed location such as a nightstand.

It makes me wonder...is the 1 foot distance most people set a nightstand from the bed really that far away?

Since a picture is worth 1,000 words, here is the view from my bed. Pistol is a G21SF. Pretty close and quick to get to, and it won't move if I roll over. I can look over and see the night sights even if it somehow gets really dark, no not knowing where it is.

Gen 3 G22 with Trijicon HD sights. Small bedside safe, full mag in the gun, empty pipe. Spare loaded mag next to it in the safe.

I feel comfortable but ready with this set up.

I have teenagers living in the house and the gun is always locked up.

OP: suggest you consider putting the mag in the gun. If the SHTF, you don't want to be fumbling in the dark trying to orient the mag.

It comes down to standardization. Whether home, hotel, mom, any other bed, same setup (under pillow). If carry condition 1, what is difference concerning ND? I think less likelihood beneath pillow or at the very least, no more of risk than on hip. If not chambered without holster, absolutely safe - even with small children around. Just my take...

My Edc g33 with an extra mag and flashlight. Loaded +1 in a small lockbox. I have kids so things have to stay locked. I keep other stuff in bigger safe that is not as easy to get into quickly.

22 w/tlr-3 on the headboard hot and ready in a holster. Not a heavy sleeper, so when the dog hears a mouse fart in the neighbors house I'm awake.

While I love glocks and own a few, I use a 12 gauge loaded w/ 00 buckshot, LaserLyte, and 500 lumen light to protect my family. I carry a 33 and keep a 34 w/ tactical light in my truck, both loaded w/ DPX. I also keep a 12 gauge w/ pistol grip under the back seat of my truck. Have a Baer in my desk drawer in case I want to defend myself in style.

Your bedside Glock...Loaded or unloaded ??
My bedside pistol with a loaded magazine inserted sits on the nightstand by my head. The chamber is unloaded; my small but strong mini-flashlight sits next to the pistol alongside my cellphone.

I hate chambering a lot of carry ammo, so G19 loaded with 19 round mag in it. Sits in a Safariland ALS, so it's guard is protected, but I can picked it up with one hand, and silently flick the holster off with the thumb break.

During the day, I put the gun in the safe, or change the mag and carry it.

The only time my Glocks are unloaded is for cleaning, dry fire and if the magazine goes dry.

Always loaded and holstered.

At night I keep my Para-Ordnance P-14 (fat body 1911) with topped off mag, cocked and locked in a holster attached to an appliance that slides between the mattress and box spring and holds the gun at a 45* draw angle right where my hand normally falls. I can draw without even taking my hand out from under the covers. A belt sized to slip over my head, cross chest, with 2 spare mags and Surefire hangs from the headboard.

The picture is from when I first made it about 10 years ago and put a GLOCK 20 in it

I keep the Glock loaded with a full mag and one in the chamber. It's stowed conveniently with a spare mag in a pistol safe mounted beneath the bed frame. The safe can be unlocked quickly while lying in bed in total darkness (no batteries or electronics to fail). A gas spring opens the safe lid and presents the pistol in a holster beneath the lid. My gal has the same setup on her side of the bed.
I have the same setup :-) , but on the side of the bed right by my pillow.

This Glock 20 is next to me, with a 20 round mag or 30 round mag, and one in the pipe. Holster holds an extra mag.

I train with this holster, and I keep a Safe-T-Blok installed on the gun at all times.
