Interesting thing about the movies Rio Bravo and El Dorado is they are similar in theme.

Cheyenne Social Club, one of the best western comedies ever. Great cast too with Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, and Shirley Jones (one more role as a hooker for Mrs. Partridge).

While comparing Rio Bravo and El Dorado don't leave out the third movie that played on that same plot line...1970's
...
You'll notice Jack Elam as the shotgun wielding sidekick in this version of the story.

Writer George Plympton also tried his hand at being a stuntman in this film. For those of you who are a little younger and maybe haven't heard of Plympton, he liked to try his hand at various professions and write books/articles about his experiences as a major league pitcher, pro quarterback, and once even drag raced M1 Abrams tanks with Formula One champion Jackie Stewart.

The following is a little long but it gives an inside look at Plympton's stunt work on Rio Lobo. I believe this is from the television special about this subject.

Appaloosa is definitely in my top five Westerns. Very, very underrated movie. Harris, Mortensen, and Irons were excellent. And Ed Harris' character has some of the funniest lines I've heard in a Western.

Dead heat between Unforgiven and The Magnificent Seven. Then a special mention of the movie that got me interested in westerns: Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, seen as a kid way back then...

I recall The Appaloosa was a Marlon Brando film, and an excellent one at that. Same with One Eyed Jacks. They're both high on my list of Best Westerns. I'd forgotten that Brando made a couple of memorable Western movies.

And since you brought up Ed Harris, I think Riders of the Purple Sage was a very fine movie also.

This thread brings back forgotten movies.

And though not technically a Western, it's kind of a Western.

I have never seen it... Figured I'd check it out from all the rave reviews on here.

I'm about an hour into it and am just not that impressed...

Once Upon a Time in the West

Claudia Cardinale (and not her nose).
Charles Bronson
Henry Fonda playing WAY against type

What kind of movie blows away two fine character actors, Jack Elam and Woody Strode, in the first scene?

Lonesome Dove, pretty good, it based on the true life events of several men, rolled into a handful of characters.

It is a great film, but what makes you think it is based on true life events. It all came out of the creative mind of Larry McMurtry. NOT based on any true life persons.

This is a great scene in a great movie, it doesn't get any better than John Wayne and Dean Martin together in a western.

Based loosely on Oliver Goodnight and Charles Loving and their cattle drives north.
