Those of you that say Once Upon a Time in the West have more patience than I. I could barely sit through that one.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that I liked the latest version of True Grit better than the original. I know I will be flamed as a heretic for even suggesting that Jeff Bridges is a better Rooster Cogburn than John Wayne but..... I am not really saying that. John Wayne is John Wayne and he had a pretty good performance as Rooster, however he was surrounded by mediocre co stars, (except for Robert Duvall of course) which in my opinion took away some from the performance. I always liked the movie, but I just think I like the new one better.

A vote for...

...'The Tin Star'-Henry Fonda & Anthony Perkins
Fonda:"You're wearing your guns too low"
Perkins:"Sheriff Parker wore his guns this way!"
Fonda:"Parker's dead."

"High Plains Drifter" is always #1 for me. Clint Eastwood as the vengeful spirit. Raping, shooting, stealing, painting the town red. Awsome.

"Fist Full of Dollars" and "Wyatt Earp" come a close second.

Tombstone was a fun flick (and I'll certainly watch it when it's on) but it lacked the authenticity that Wyatt Earp had.

The Good The Bad & The Ugly.

Because it's Clint Eastwood.

If you're a Sam Shepard fan he portrayed Frank James in
, mentioned a couple of pages back. I think it was a great oversight that the Academy of Motion Pictures didn't nominate Casey Affleck for Best Actor in this movie. Jeremy Renner portrays Jesse's cousin Wood Hite. Really an outstanding movie, in my opinion.

I agree with you; everything about True Grit II was better than the original, but then it was made in a different era. As much as I like The Searchers I think John Wayne's best Western was Red River.

The soundtrack is awesome too. Come to think of it, a lot of what I consider to make a really great movie has to do with how the music fits in with it. Sergio Leone got that right too on his westerns.

Well, maybe I'll try to watch the new one again. I rented it awhile ago, but gave up about 1/3 of the way into it. It just wasn't doing anything for me. But I've had that happen with some movies, second watching actually makes them better.

Yes, music has a powerful influence on a movie's effect.

Damn, I had to get 6 pages into the list before I see SamSpade nominated "Hombre" - my absolute favorite of
all Western movies.... with a great understated script:

"No more, huh?"

"Well now, just what do you suppose hell is going to look like?"

And the closing scene, that then morphs into a sepia toned photo from 30 years earlier ... some damn good directing by Martin Ritt, there.

Worth checking out, if you have not yet seen it.
