There's a lot of good westerns, but Outlaw Josey Wales is the one I can always sit down and watch from beginning to end.

My favorite:

Lone Wadi: I don't guess we'll be seeing any more of that Indian girl. I kind of liked her.
Wales: Yeah, me, too, but that's always the way it is. As soon as I get to liking somebody, it seems like they ain't around for long.
Lone Wadi: I've noticed that when you get to disliking them, they ain't around for long, neither.

And the closing scene, that then morphs into a sepia toned photo from 30 years earlier ... some damn good directing by Martin Ritt, there.

Worth checking out, if you have not yet seen it.

Wow -- only two nods for HOMBRE...I'll make it three...

It has great understated acting by Paul Newman, one of the slimier Western villains in Richard Boone, Frank Silvera stealing every scene he's in as a Mexican bandit, and an incredibly edgy screenplay by author Elmore Leonard -- and, as bobmitchum says, all woven together perfectly by director Martin Ritt...

The dialogue just sings. After an ambush, Newman and Silvera have an exchange from a distance, under a flag of truce:

Bandit (Silvera -- gesturing to a bullet-wound in his side): "Look, amigo, how close you come!"

John Russell (Newman): "I tried to do better. I think you moved."

Bandit: "You can be sure I move! How do you prefer them -- tied to a tree?"

Russell: "That'd be nice."

Bandit: "You like to pull the trigger, eh?"

Russell: "I can do it again for you."

so i've never seen a western in my life, I was gonna just browse this thread to get some ideas for good ones and see what all the fuss is about.

But if a 'space western' counts, i've seen the firefly series and serenity movie.

Really, it's Deadwood, Season 1.

If it has to be a movie, then it's The Outlaw Josey Wales.

"You gonna pull them pistols or whistle Dixie?"
