Unforgiven... with Clint Eastwood.

"It's a hellava thing killin' a man....

You take away all he's got... and all that he is ever gonna have."

That hits home with me... and makes me sad.

+1. Eastwood's last great Western.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly is right up there as well.

My top 20 or so have all been mentioned, so, since I couldn't pick just one favorite anyway, I'm going to throw out a funny one nobody has mentioned:

Wagons East!

And, in the realm of T.V.... Firefly and Deadwood, and further back... Have Gun, Will Travel.

All of the movies mentioned are great movies. My favorites are:

Fort Apache
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
Rio Grande

They were directed by John Ford, John Wayne's character was pretty much the same in each movie, and many of the same actors played much the same type of character in each movie.

Another vote for the Outlaw Josey Wales.

Open Range was very good too. Annette Bening was super hot in that movie.

Boy, tall order. I love the genre. So many favorites.

No list, though...cruel parameter.

Ok: despite being a John Wayne fan from early childhood (he reminded me of my dad), my all time favorite Western, and possibly all time favorite movie is "High Noon"

A great story, beautifully acted, with genuine insight into human nature.

As someone who chose a career in LE, for me it is a cautionary tale, that depicts society's ambivalence towards its protectors.

I've seen it dozens of times, and always am moved by that moment when Will Kane steps out onto the street, and, despite being abandoned by everyone, and, in a quiet moment, heads directly into a confrontation with evil, not only to protect himself and his future but to protect the future of the very community that abandoned him.

My thots exactly on GBU. The score was spectacular too

Tied with it is Once Upon a Time in the West. A masterpiece, pure and simple. The score is absolutely haunting.

The Outlaw Josie Wales a close 2nd to the above.

John Wayne is John Wayne and he had a pretty good performance as Rooster, however he was surrounded by mediocre co stars, (except for Robert Duvall of course) which in my opinion took away some from the performance. I always liked the movie, but I just think I like the new one better.
+1 I never liked original True Grit or the book for that matter. 2nd one was great, but I still hate the ending.

Bridges was a better Rooster Cogburn, hands down, and I'm a great admirer of Duke Wane.

Sorry for missing this for so long but....

No, it was the one where 13 states saw the federal government raping and ignoring the Constitution and attempted to peacefully separate themselves from it and form their own Constitution based government.

Your "hero" Lincoln was for sending all blacks back to Africa, and was popularly known as "The king of the n--jokes"....after his propensity for telling off color jokes about slaves and freemen.

Read the books.

See my bio for the list...Still waiting for someone to prove the facts presented therein wrong.
