Soccer Ref punched and killed

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/05/05...es-police-say/

this is a sad story but i do not understand the last paragraph? Is reffing soccer really that dangerous?
Do refs normally have this much trouble?

I played football, wrestled and volleyball and I cannot EVER imagine someone on either team punching a ref for a call...

Sad news. It seems like once a year here we get some killed by a single punch. Its usually a KO punch and the victim hits their head on a curb or the concrete.

It's possible the punch to the head didn't cause the victims death. While a blow to the head can cause one to vomit it usually doesn't cause blood to be vomited. A postmortem may tell another story.

It's unfortunate this crap happens as much as it does. I remember booking a 47 year old CPA for battery with substantial bodily harm. He was a short, mild-mannered pudgy stereotypical accountant. His daughter was playing basketball at the park gym when the ref called a foul on her. He got in the ref's face and punched him twice, causing a bloody nose and a shiner. I just don't get why people get so upset over sports.

Not usual but it can. Sever head trauma can cause disruption to the nerves and cause muscle spasms resulting in broken blood vessels allowing the victim to cough or vomit blood. This is a local story. Apparently it was one hell of a wicked punch. I expect them to find many broken bones in the sinus and ocular cavities.

The picture in the article doesn't look like Utah. It looks like it's in South America.

Also unsure of last paragraph. I don't get it. If this is proximate cause, the kid should be seriously punished.

Many people have died from the "knock-out game"

This is where a thug pick some person at random and tries to knock him out with one punch, typically delivered blindside so the victim never even sees it coming.

Personally I think this kid should go away for 10-15 years, but he'll probable get probation and community service. .

I've had a concussion that resulted in vomiting a little blood. Spent three days in the hospital. The 17 year old should be pummeled until he vomits blood. If he passes on, well, what goes around comes around. The f-u attitude that pervades our society is way out of control.

My sons and I play soccer, and I believe that sport has the potential to generate more rage than most others. The single ref (if you don't count the minor input from the two linesmen) is in complete control of the game, from the clock, to the fouls, to the scoring decisions. It is a huge amount of data to process, and no ref can see it all. Couple that overload with many refs' personal playing style bias, and you are left with a lot of subjective wiggle in the way any given game is played. Now, take that wiggle room and apply it to a game where a single play OFTEN determines the outcome of the game, and you will see a lot of anger.

This is not to say that anything justifies violence against a ref. Those guys are out there for the love of the game, a little exercise, and $25 bucks. That kid, while I'm sure he did not intend to kill the guy, needs to be made an example of.

Is there any kind of rule like striking a ref results in an automatic forfeit for the team?

I believe so.

The team the kid played for has been expelled from the league.

Utah has long had softer laws on illegal immigration than even states such as California. It allows illegal-immigrant students to pay in-state tuition at public universities and gives “driving privilege cards” to undocumented migrants to allow them to obtain insurance

It is a Hispanic league. The popular perception that Utah is all white Mormons is all wrong.

The picture was a dated picture of the victim, it was not from the scene and likely not from Utah.

The kid should be punished for assault, that is what he did. I am sure he did not intend to kill anymore than anyone else that punches someone. The act the person chooses to do is what should be punished. If people get killed from punches then the penalty for punching someone should go up for everyone who punches.

And when would that be, if not now?

By almost every possible objective measure, the US is stronger or better off now than it has ever been.

I agree, lock him up for assault and involuntary manslaughter. Not murder.

We ain't talking about them hyphenated-'mericans. We're talkin' about real 'merican-'mericans. Like the kinds from the 50s, when women knew to keep in line or they'd taste the back of a hand, and children didn't speak until spoken to or else they got the belt, and all them uppity immigrants kept to themselves on the other side of the tracks.

Them were some good times, all-right.

P.S. K.Kiser, if I never hear a post as ignorant as yours again, it will be way, way too soon.
