Is it legal to arm a private yacht?

Just for poops and grins, let's say that you're obscenely wealthy and can afford a $100+ million megayacht. Would it be legal to arm the vessel with say, a 25mm chain gun in a naval mount? How about pintle mounts for machine guns?

I'm just curious (and bored); they would seem like fun items to spend money on.

Depends...

In the open ocean?
Why not? Almost anything goes.

Within a nation's borders/territorial waters?
Local laws apply.

This is an often-debated topic within the yachting community.
Even having a shotgun on board can get you arrested within the territory of many nations.

Some yacht owners of even smaller sailing yachts carry small arms in hidden compartments to deal with pirates. In some ports they risk imprisonment and confiscation of their vessel.

I used to work for the guy who owned this yacht; it had a crew of 16, 8 of whom were well armed security.

As Atlas said, in the open water, you would be fine with almost anything. Good luck trying to ever dock in any port though.

This is why you need your own island to sail out of..

Arm her any way you wish, be happy.

There are already quite a few armed private boats out on the sea. But all I have heard of were owned by rich people (mostly oil guys) from other countries, not the USA.

I actually floated a business concept on here about doing just that. Get two small tramp freighters and station one in international waters just south of the Suez Canal. Station the other one 2,000 to 2,500 miles SE of there. Have ship mounted and infantry fully automatic weapons and ammunition for sale on each. Offer to buy them back at the other ship minus a 10% rental fee for those who don't want to try and enter a port with automatic weapons on board. It would give ship owners a way to arm their ships in pirate infested waters without having to worry about running afoul of regulations against guns in foreign ports. Heck you could even provide temporary crews for the crew served weapons. Granted there would be issues to work out but I think it might work.

The boat in my OP was based in Bermuda.

Thanks, I'll put you down for that. Powerball is $116 million bucks tonight. Maybe I can finance the rest that way.

Small arms are enough to thwart pirates. If you need anything larger you're probably going up against someone's Navy, and unless its Canadian that means you're screwed.

I've thought about this too. All you really need is a few AK's, not even full auto. But, entering many ports with even those is verboten. A hidden compartment, possibly in keel and only accessible from underwater could work, but would still be findable.

The best solution I could figure would be to drop an anchored, watertight container overboard off shore, set it so it hovered ~30 feet under water and mark the location with GPS. Dump it, go into port, collect it on the outbound leg. Wouldn't work for costal cruising though. Too bad all the countries can't just agree on a "safe passage" law. Pull into port, the customs guy inspects and puts a seal on your gun case, you do your thing and they inspect and retrieve the seal when you leave.

Having been around the yachting community a little bit, just about every one of them has at least a decent long arm on board somewhere. For the mega yachts with a security detail and decent firepower, they will deploy a second boat which will wait outside of port with all the hardware and some crew on-board.

One guy who will of course go un-named loved 1911's. He had 1911's concealed all over the boat...in addition to two in the ceiling of his private jet.

A family friend retired when he was about 40 - already a multi-millionaire many times over, but of course after sailing around in his sail boat for a couple of years he got bored and went back to work building companies - he is in his 80s still creating and building new enterprises.

The point being he says his sailboat was always armed, did not matter that he was in South America or any of the Carabean islands or wherever, he was armed.

One of my earliest memories was being a small child on his sailboat...

It doesn't make sense since New York passed new gun control law and allowed this ship Eclipse (a russian's billionarie yacht) to sit in the heart of NYC with several deadly missiles on aboard of the ship.

EDIT: In addition to this, I am sure there are about 20 to 30 security personnel on the ship with full-auto AKs and countless of +10 magazines; RPGs; machine guns; grenades; and etc.

Getting them to sell to a US civilian might be another story. Guess you might need to buddy up to some 3rd world dictator.

Funny, they don't seem to mention it. Maybe if you have to ask you can't afford it? Or it depends on whether you are buying 20 or 20,000?

Wait! Are you saying billions of dollars can buy you special treatment in New York City? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you!

The Eclipse also has its own deployable SUBMARINE that can be used to escape and evade in the event of a determined surface attack.

Like it or hate it, the 'cool factor' on that yacht is through the roof!
