So I Quit Smoking...

Today marks a fortnight since my last cigarette. I waited this long to post about it for two reasons: First, I wanted to be sure I could make it through the first bit before I started bragging. Second, it is rare that I get the opportunity to use the word fortnight, and it was too good to pass up.

I started smoking about two years ago, when I was in AIT. It was a good way to socialize, catch a break, and pass some time. I got up to a little more than a half pack a day of Marlboro Reds. However, my run time has been steadily increasing, and I would like to get promoted. Also, my wife has been getting tired of kissing an ash tray. Finally, the price of cigarettes is only rising. In short, there are a lot of good reasons to quit, and not really any good ones to keep going.

The first few days were pretty rough, but the cravings have been decreasing in frequency and intensity. Now, the only time that I have intense cravings are when I am drinking. Since I don't drink in bars around here, I am generally at home, so I would have to drive somewhere to get cigarettes to smoke (not ever going to happen if I have been drinking). At work, it helps that almost no one on my shift smokes anymore, so I don't have the constant temptation of bumming a cigarette from someone hanging over my head.

I guess I just had to tell someone about this, and brag a little bit.

One thing I have noticed, is that my legs are getting tired faster than my lungs when I run now. That is such a huge difference for me.

Vaping sort of does turn into a hobby. Always new flavors/devices to try.

Good for you OP. Cigarettes suck.

This will probably upset some folks. I don't get the whole "it is so hard to quit smoking" thing. If you really want to quit, put the damn things down and never pick up another one again. I smoked when I was a kid, but when I finally faced the reality that it is a disgusting habit, not to mention the health risks, I quit. Back when I was a kid, at least you thought you could use the excuse that it really wasn't that bad for you because they weren't as aware of the many health risks. This day and age with what they know about what cigarette smoking does to you, why in the world would somebody still smoke. Stupid is as stupid does. I can't stand to be around a smoker. The smell is putrid. You can pick someone out who has been a smoker most of their lives. Not only do they smell like hell, they look like hell. Yellow fingers, watery eyes, wrinkled skin, and they are sickly looking. Why would anyone let themselves be controlled by a cigarette. If you don't have the will power to quit you need to grow a pair. Quit feeling sorry for yourself and do the right thing. There, I feel much better now. Got to go now. Time to fire one up. NOT!!

Good for you!
I smoked for 20 years and I used the nicorette gum when i quit. I only used like 20 pieces out of the pack when i was "cured" so to speak. Ive never looked back. That was 8 years ago.

You've got a long and healthy road ahead of you. Good luck and keep us posted.

Good decision. In the military it's easy to pick up those bad habits. If dipping was a professional sport, I would have been an All-Star. The birth of my son made me decide that I wanted to be around and a good role model. I couldn't quit cold turkey so I went through the tobacco cessation classes on FT Drum and took the meds/wore the patch. Worked like a charm for me.

Keep it up. You'll be glad you did.

Whatever it takes. My kids were a good motivator as well.

Good for you! Glad you only smoked for a short time. I did the nasty things for 25 years, starting back in the Army when they supplied them to us in our C-Rations. I tried the patches, gum, and even hypnosis. The only thing that worked was when I decided I WANTED to quit. Then it was easy. We all know we should, but once you cross that line into wanting, you are halfway there.

Good job! Another long time smoker here (22 years). Next month will be a year since my last cigarette. I went the vaping route like others here.

Vaping is a life-saver (and a crutch for me)...but finding atty's that don't crater after a week of use is difficult.

Congrats on quitting! That's awesome.
