Food suggestions needed for Cav Scout stationed in Afghan

My grandson is stationed at FOB Sharana, Paktika Province of Eastern Afghanistan. I want to send him a box of some things (thinking of food things) he cant get there. I can email him and ask him if he needs anything but I want it to be a surprise.
So my question is: who has been there? and what did you find yourself wanting (food) that was hard to come by?

thanks.....

Never been.

Think pork. If a local steals it, it's a sin.

Spent some time there last summer...Very hot and the elevation is in the 7000' range. Chow hall was very good, considering the area.

My personal suggestions...

-- Any sort of powdered drink mixes that are for 16oz/0.5L bottles as that bottle size is EVERYWHERE there.

- Hard candy, beef jerky, nuts (in packaging that can fit in a cargo pocket)

- Don't send anything that can melt. There are a ton of Clif bars available in the chow halls, so unless he wants a flavor that isn't Chocolate, Peanut butter, I wouldn't send those.

Hope that helps...hope his tour passes quickly.

Beef Jerky... always Beef Jerky.

Anything that rolls or flies outside the wire is stuck either eating MRE's or to-go plates that went cold ours before hand. I cant think of how many times about hour 4-5 of flying idiot circles out over some BSO that I wasnt raiding my bag for a stick of beef jerky.

Id recommend Sam's Club or some other buy in bulk store and get the individually wrapped sticks. If you open a whole bag, yeah thats great the whole crew on a vehicle can pass it around but you've gotta eat it or its gonna dry out if you dont eat it fast enough.

Another great one to have is Cup O Noodles or any of the other self contained ramen type foods that dont require you to go find a pot and a stove to make. They were great for down days to fight the hunger especially since a lot of FOBs are killing hot meals for budget and supply reasons.

Dip and cigs to trade with, Roman noodles, oreos, jerky, wet wipes, and encouraging letters.

Just saw someone said tuna. I had forgot how nice it was to get those tuna packs. Awesome sauce for sure.

I was in the same area though different fobs. Hydration was a serious matter as elevation can get up there. Lots of up and down.

I was there for 2010-2011, they had a very good DFAC then.

My advise is to send venison jerky from home.

What FOBs were you guys at? DFAC? At a FOB? We slept on plywood and ate local food cooked by the locals. We also **** in metal drums.

How about some good food for the brains? Send him some porn.

Porn is like gold, if my memory served, especially in a Muslim country that ban that sort of stuff. Back in Desert Storm, I traded the Playboy issue of the Twin Peaks chick for a door gunner chicken plate, which was a lot more bulletproof than the flak jackets we were issued.

Went out to Orgun-E a few times...chow hall was awesome...one of the better ones in theater. I had been at BAF, the larger BCT FOBs, some Bn FOBs and had not been a fresh strawberry until we went to Orgun-E...near the end of the proverbial supply chain

Plus, Army chow halls have much better coffee than any AF one. Coffe at the 'Deid was awful, but G-d Bless Army coffee!

Sharana, hands down, had the CLEANEST porta-s*****rs I have ever seen! I would "drop a deuce" there in a heartbeat...just like home!

Things must have changed a lot. I know BAF and Kandahar had KBR handling food services. Kandahar had awesome food. They also had an Afes and a small coffee shop.

Did you make it to Shkin? I liked that place a lot. Small and very little brass.

A quality knife would be a very nice gift.

I like the Model 1 from Ek Commando Knife Company. http://www.ekknife.com/

I think most soldiers would prefer the Ek Bowie as it's more of a utility/fighting knife where the Model 1 is purely a fighting knife. These knives are NOT cheap, but they're great quality and why not send the best?

LOUISIANA HOT SAUCE!

If you've ever received some good hot sauce from someone, you'll pay it forward for decades to come.

What to send is determined by the recipient's preference. I can tell you what not to send - cookies - for me, they always arrived as something resembling sawdust.

The DFAC's at FOB Sharana had Tobasco and Texas Pete when I was there in 2010-2011. The PX had Frank's Red Hot. So I would try other brands not available there. Perhaps a Habanero pepper sauce? I like El Yucateco Habanero Roja

(Fixed it for ya!)

To each their own when it comes to hot sauce, well, unless it that's stuff that resembles untreated NYC sewage water.

Pretty much all the food (actual food) that got sent to me is still sitting in my cabinet. However, some good snacks are always a good idea - gummy life savers, some chex mix, anything you can snack on. Food situation here is good, and actually cooking your own is a pain in the rear. Plus, you have very limited space to work with.
