A double barrel shotgun, so I could fire off two rounds in the air to scare off intruders.

Reloading is allowed and as much ammo as the budget will stretch to.

Either: Gen 4 Glock 19 or HK45.

Glock 26, no question. Lots of 15, 17, and 33 round mags!! Easily concealable, has the firepower and accuracy of a full size handgun.

Yes it is but it might be a bit tricky to conceal!

This will work - the Veep said so. It must be true, then.

I count 12 replies, so far, for a compact or sub compact Glock. That seems to be the winner, by a landslide.

I know I said my L1A1 but that's because I couldn't stand the thought of not having one. The more practical answer from a survival point of view would be a single barrel 12 ga shotgun. A single barrel shotgun has feed and defended a lot of families in the old days. You can take anything from rabbit to deer with it. With only one shot you learn to make every shot count which saves ammo.
If I could have another gun to go with it would be a bolt action 22 rifle with iron sights. You can carry a lot of ammo on you if you need to be on the move.

I struggle to come to terms with this.

How is the more practical firearm the one that, for a great deal of your life, you won't have access to?

So has the spear. You don't even need ammo. Just saying....
