Man thats bad for everyone involved. I would like to know the exact cause of death when it becomes available. You hear of all kinds of brain injuries including severe penetrations but this little bb killed the kid???

Up next: suspension of school children who let Pop Tart crumbs fall onto the table. Because after all, crumbs look just like BBs

Man, we use to have BB gun fights. Of course we had a distance amount in which you couldn't fire. Sad for the family and the kid should have been safer but kids die from doing stupid crap.

I'm not a neuro surgeon nor do I play one on TV, but I'd say it just happened to hit the right spot.

I believe the article said it was right above or behind the ear - either way that puts the BB really close to the 'vital' area of the brain that covers the stuff that really matters.

You could literally chop off the front half of your brain and be just fine. Probably wouldn't see too well, but you'd still be breathing and have a beating heart. What they call the 'grey matter' area of the brain, in general, is less than vital in what seems to be relatively large quantities.

Now, those little bits under and between those giant flaps of brain... those are kinda important. So anything that could cause swelling or get blood or something into those areas - that would be really bad.

That's why some folks, like Ms. Giffords, can take a larger caliber shot to the head and survive.

There's a number of other factors. Trying not to be disrespectful to this little boy - but he could have died from shock or complications during a surgical procedure.

During trama sometimes the trama itself isn't the direct cause of death.

It's difficult to put into words how sad that situation is. For the boy who died, his brother who killed him, and his mother.

My BB rifle is a pump and can approach 900 fps at max. That's enough for penetration. Any projectile at velocity is dangerous and should be treated so. In my youth we knew the difference between a cheap Daisy BB gun and a pump one.

Careful is not just a word.

Wow, that older brother will (should) likely never be able to get over that. Terrible.

My 10 year old cousin accidentally shot his 8 year old brother in the heart with a BB gun many years ago. The younger cousin died. No, the older brother was never the same.

That's why Dad hated guns and refused to have anything to do with them or buy me one. He had a BB lodged in his skull from when he was a kid.

Mom took me to buy my first BB gun. And .22. And shotgun.

Thanks, Mom!

Amen. I thank God every day that my stupidity didn't kill me at a young age. And everyday I pray for my children that they will be as lucky.

I believe in the right to bear arms, but I am torn about how and when to expose my kids.

I looked it up. That model can shoot BBs at 750fps. That's a lot considering how inexpensive it is.

So this BB gun just magically appears where the kids are playing?

I bet nobody went to WalMart and bought it for them.

Shot my brother in the eye with an ANCIENT daisy lever action BB gun that belonged to my uncles, born in the 40's..

What happened, is my 5 yr old brother was way across an acre lot, up in the back of an old abandoned truck. I was skipping bb's off the asphalt drive that divided the acre and dinging the truck he was in, and he screamed and grabbed his face..

He ran into my granddad's house, claiming I shot him in the eye, and when confronted, I adamantly denied it..

And then while examining his eye, a BB rolled out of the corner of it..

No real damage done...close and scary call I'll never forget though

So sad.

Man, things can go wrong in a second. We had friends over a couple of weeks ago. Their two year old fell into our pool. I ran across the yard and jumped in within 20 seconds but it was still scary and emotionally draining.

Today we got our first estimate for the pool fence we've been discussing for the last year.

Last year I investigated a shooting the a BB gun. The victim was shot be his buddy at about 10 feet as a joke. The BB went into the lung and aorta. If it had not been for a medevac by air I would have been working a homicide. Drunks and gun what can you say.
