Does "sim racing" have a shelf life as a hobby?

So, who here's gotten into "sim racing" and then burned out on it, and who's a die-hard? Tell me about what wheel(s), pedals, etc. you invested in, recommendations for an interested newb, hardware you love, hardware to avoid. I seek wisdom from someone else besides insidesimracing dot tv.
