Well, they got that satellite into orbit even if it was DOA. That means that theoretically they can hit anywhere in the world. Of course, that tiny satellite was a much easier payload to lift than one of their warheads (which are probably still fairly massive). They have all the components necessary, but it will still take them time to integrate them into a viable weapon system. That doesn't rule out a 'Hail Mary' type shot with a low probability of success.

Sounds like something young dictator must have learned from his father on how to fix the local economy when times are tough--threaten the US and wait for their appeasement dollars to roll in.

Do we have the technology to shoot it down?

Yes, the USS Lake Erie did successfully shoot down a failed satellite shortly before it re-entered the atmosphere back in Feb 2008 at an altitude of 133 nautical miles. It was a bit of a 'Hail Mary' shot for us as well, but it was a success. I can only assume that we've come further in that area in the last 5 years.

Of course, the flip side is that we knew exactly when and where that satellite was going to be coming from. Not so with an actual warhead.

The satellite? Yes, of course. We have several different systems that can do that. Shoot down an ICBM? With stuff that's been declassified, maaaaybe. I wouldn't want to bet a city on it. The US may have some classified programs with higher hit probability, but who knows what those are. With a ballistic missile, you ideally want to stop them in the launch/ boost phase. Once they get going they zip along at a pretty good clip. A small target moving at 16,000 mph or so is very difficult to stop. I don't think technology is quite there yet, but that's a problem we've had good engineers working on for decades.

NK better watch out or we'll have to send Kerry over there. He was in Nam and knows how to handle this kind of threat.

Much shorter than that, and it would be complete scorched earth.
Oh please. I was stationed in Korea and worked in the target flight. The OPLAN would take much longer than 2 hours just to start.

Oh god I totally forgot about him, he will end up killing more of our own than our enemy will.

Unlikely. The people who track these things say the satellite is tumbling out of control.

No, he grew up in private schools in Switzerland starting around 1991. He was born in 83 or 84.

To be fair, we have retaliated. We chopped that tree right down a few days later. That showed them.

Maybe Obama could write him an apology letter and settle this whole thing?

With this leadership, I'm sure any response, if any, would be pretty tame comparatively.

Kerry will say we deserved whatever we got, because of atrocities we committed during the Korean war.

Exactly. Every time NK ratchets up the game a little, it's a ploy for more aid to quiet them down for a while. I won't spend one second worrying about NK launching anything other than words our way.

I don't know, depends on if they hit a red state or a blue state. If they kept shooting nukes at red states Obama would probably keep apologizing.

They've been talking nonsense for years. And they are full aware that if they were to do such a thing, their country would cease to exist.

I don't know. I just keep thinking...'don't underestimate your enemy'. I know it's like The Mouse that Roared. However in this case, we've got a mouse that is not rational - or at least not rational from our perspective.

His threats sound about as credible as the threats surrounding the fiscal cliff. Both are just cries from a desperate person for attention.
