China is obligated to defend NK but I suspect China won't be too quick about it. Their troops might be there just to defend China from the onslaught of NK refugees.

If China gets involved......why would we pay a dime we owe them? That would be aiding the enemy! We should also throw their citizens out of the US that are here on Visas.

I don't think the Chinese public would support NK. I met a Chinese university student studying here and any mention of North Korea would send him on a tirade how his grandfather died in North Korea and they basically wrote off Chinese participation in their history books and museums and how China spends money, food , and fuel to prop up the country just so North Korea won't send over its poor refugees burdening the hospitals and schools

given its a sample size of one but by the fervor he was speaking I doubt he was the only one in China that thought this way

It is not that simple. It's not like we went to China opened a banking account then borrowed money from them. There are bonds, U.S. Treasury notes, business interests, real estate interest, et cetera....

Yea, he will be expected to take action. However we have a difference in opinion as to what actions he would take.

On another note, wouldn't it be in China's best interests if NK was more like SK? Instead of NK being a leech on China, they could actually positively contribute to the region.

If so, that means they could actually support a US backed overthrow of the NK "cult".

This is quite simply not true. We make a lot of stuff--more than anyone else in the world except China--and we make more high-tech stuff than anyone. I'm not talking about phones or computers, I'm talking about industrial robots and jet engines and heavy machinery.

That's all stuff that's built in the US. Our manufacturing sector is quite strong. Our manufacturing base is the strongest in the world.

What we *don't* have anymore is high-wage low-skill manufacturing JOBS, but that's a different story.

Enough, if they had to. The trick is making it necessary for them to do it.

None of the supposed "communist" republics of the 20th century really were. They were totalitarian oligarchies/dictatorships using communist rhetoric, and the threat of imprisonment or death, to keep their populations in line.

.
In a similar note, I saw where fast-food employees are marching on McDonald's, Wendy's, etc... Demanding somewhere in the neighborhood of $17 an hour to run a cash register.

You can almost foresee the day when every job must pay the same or its somehow unfair.

If they cave they're going to be in for a shock cuz I ain't paying $10.00 for a barely edible fast food burger. I suspect a lot of people will agree with me.

The mutual defense pact between China and north korea was signed sometime in the early 60's. Things have changed, in regards to China's attitude not only to the United States but north korea as well. The young "communist leaders", and I put quotations around communist leader because China is shifting into more of a quasi free enterprise country, than a communist one, do not want to disturb their relations with the rest of the world for a little pipsqueak, with a napoleon complex.
Also, kim jong-un is openly ridiculed and made fun of throughout China on the web, and in the press.

China used to consider north korea its friend, but now really wants it as a buffer between them and South Korea.

April 10

Current rumblings from Pyongyang say that April 10th might end up being the start of something.

Quote:
North Korea told foreign embassies Friday that it will not be able to guarantee their safety “in the event of conflict” from April 10, the U.K. said in a statement.
Also:
Quote:
[T]he North told South Korean companies that operate factories in the Kaesong industrial zone to complete pulling out by April 10, Ok Sung-suk, vice president of an association that represents them, said on Thursday, according to Reuters.
And other news from UK sources:
Quote:
North Korea is reported to have loaded the the two missile batteries on its east coast on to launchers.
Mark your calendars and place your bets
