Not if your next phone is an iPhone it won't be.

That was one of my first thoughts, but it's tempered by my experience with my quad core Nexus 4, which has given good battery life while being very thin.

I expect advances in batteries to continue to improve.

The real question is of the software writers (OS).

8 core may use less total juice than a dual or quad core because utilization per core would be lower. TBO makes a good point that developers would need to make apps that can take advantage of all 8 cores.

I'd hazard to guess it won't be much faster than the dual and quads we have out now. At least, not so that you'd notice.

Kinda like when you and your wife got by on your $35,000/yr. job. You struggled, but made do.
You got to $90,000/yr and it SEEMED like you should have alot of extra money left over. Heck, you should be saving more than you spend every month. Didn't work that way, though, right?

**In this poorly thought out analogy your wife is a phone and her shoes/handbags/vacation ideas-whatever women spend money on- is background processes. Her taste for more, and for more complex, background processes will only become more extravagant.
Ha. Your wife is Microsoft Vista!!

Much of it will depend on the code writers.

Video and gaming should get a boost.

Software is usually written to occupy all available resources so the users would constantly want to upgrade their hardware.

So now Angry Birds will be super fast and even more impossible, and your Kindle app will load so fast it is crazy and you'll have to learn to speed read, and your golf GPS app will be so fast you'll feel rushed and miss the shot.

LOL, if you define FAST as processor speed, no the iPhone won't be as fast. If you define it as getting stuff done, you might have some competition.

In car terms, the Galaxy has more HP, but it loses the race.

I will say this for Apple, they don't just use off the shelf Arm processors. They custom design their "A" series CPUs for use in their iPhones to maximize their power. The hardware review I read on the iPhone 5 said the CPU was laid out by hand and the phone was designed with good power efficient components.

Purchased a Nokia Lumia 920 in November and have been drinking a nice big ol cup of buyers regret. Its a beautiful phone with a nice screen and Wp8 is slick, but the 920 is experiencing some major issues quality control issues. Wp8 is also missing some features and has bugs yet too be addressed.

Sorry for going off topic.....

Battery life is supposed to be over 40% better. The new Chip will use Samsungs BIG.Little concept. meaning all those cores will not be running all the time. The horsepower only gets turned on when needed.

That is the Theory, how it works in real life remains to be seen.

When did you learn about telephones? I thought you still used smoke signals.

It would have been nice if the S4 had one, i'm looking forward to playing traffic cop with the cpu tables in the kernel. I'll be picking up some device that has one of these processors after they hit.

I am a real big qualcomm fan though. I've pushed a lot of processors around, and theirs are the ones that consistently impress. The snapdragons are intense processors, they've done some amazing things with that line.

There's a reason why it's still pretty unusual to see more than four cores on consumer CPU's - many tasks just don't break down into little chunks very well, and every add'l core adds both speed and complexity, so you add less horsepower per core and more hassles as the number of cores goes up.

There certainly are 6-, 8-, 12- and 16-core workstations out there, but they're mostly used for tasks which break into chunks well, like video encoding/rendering, complex simulations, etc. Despite being absolute monsters at those specific tasks, they're often no faster (and sometimes slower!) than a standard 4-core i5 or i7 CPU at normal tasks like running MS Office, games, etc.

Long story short, I guess 8-core phones might be better at a few things, but I don't think it's going to revolutionize the experience for 98% of users. My best bet, it's a major upgrade for a few, a minor upgrade for many, and more than anything something for guys at the Verizon store to point at to convince you to buy the phone they get a bigger commission on.

That's about all they get with dual and quad core as it is.
