My new 29 SF

It took me a while but I have finally come full circle and after flirting with .460 Rowland for a short time I have purchased a BNIB G29SF! And, since I have been blessed by the Gods of Glock, I live about thirty minutes from the Smyrna Glock plant so I dropped by and got GNS installed for $57 US. I have come full circle because I had a G29 old style Gen 3, which I sold, and after many different guns I am back to owning a 29. And I am really satisfied with finding an SF even though I can't remember what the other one felt like in my hand. CRS has set in really bad. I haven't rushed to snap photos because I think that we have all seen one of these things and this one is no different than the other ones.

The 10 Ring

I am glad to be back!

Welcome, and congrats! Mine will be pulling nightstand duty this weekend, and getting some range time on Saturday with it's big brother. Going to try out some Underwood.

Thanks guys.

Has anybody tried the Underwood 180 grain @ 1300fps in the 29, with a factory recoil assembly?

I don't think you'll have an issue with the stock recoil setup, I read elsewhere the Underwoods load does around 1250ish from a G29.

I just went to the range with the G20 and G29SF and fed some Underwood 155 and 165, and some Doubletap 180 to both. No problems at all

Just ordered the DPM system, read a couple of good reviews on it, we'll see.

The DPM recoil system is intriguing. I've long thought about getting one to test for my G30SF 10mm conversion. Of course, the one for the G29/G30/G36 doesn't have the magnet, but the three-spring config illustrated below is the same. The external springs they ship in the package are different spring strengths for tuning to mid- and full-power loads. I will be interested in reading how it works out for you.

The 10 Ring

Jeff Quinn at Gunblast.com swears by them and installs one in all his Glock, S&W, and M&P pistols. Evidently, he prefers to use the DPM RSA even in Glocks with a factory dual recoil spring (G26 9mm). He has been using them since November, 2005.

I've read these reviews where Quinn writes about the DPM RSA:
There are some articles and scientific studies of the DPM RSA published in several countries. Two of the most recent articles from English-speaking countries that include objective data are the following:

Yeh, I really don't like the idea of having that magnet on my frame. One guy claims that he shot some hot 180 grain from his 29 and it made it feel like a mild 45 Auto. That would be really nice, considering the small amount of grip on the 29.

And, according to the DPM website, the unit is adjustable. I can't really fathom what it is adjustable for but I will find out soon enough.

I will post some good pics when I get it.

Sure have. A little snappy but manageable. I did put a Houge grip on mine and it helped keep the pistol from moving around in my hands between shots.
I now carry the 155gr Underwood and I'm very happy with this load!

I don't think I've shot 180 but have shot 220gr hardcast from Underwood in my G29 and it felt fine. I use a 20# wolff spring.

Did you get any leading with that round?

I have a KKM, never shot any hardcast with the stock barrel, though supposedly you're not supposed to anyway. I did have some leading that wouldn't come out with the nylon brush, had to use copper to get it clean. I've only shot maybe 25 rounds of the HC so I can't tell you what it does to a barrel in high volume.

Look forward hearing about your DPM. I didn't even know those things existed.

This GT thread has some information on what can be adjusted by the customer and at the time of ordering. See Post #1 and #4 in the thread: DPM 3-spring recoil system

I ordered the DPM from glockparts.com. $87.50 includes usps priority w/insurance.

I still have a Sprinco for a G21 even though I no longer have the G21. It kept the frame from being battered, so I guess it was doing its job.

Once I installed the mag extensions for pinky support, recoil has never been an issue. I shoot hot 155's - 200's and there are subtle diffs. But all manageable. The pinky extensions made the biggest diff to me as this was my 1st high power subcompact pistol.
Congrats to OP and enjoy shooting your new 10mm!!

Congratulations on the Glock 29…

I did about the same thing you did... i had sold my Glock 29 a few times actually... ive probably owned three diff G29's...

I finally came back to it again 6-8 months back - only THIS time I got a G29 SF with the Gen4 recoil spring setup. Love this pistol.

Ghost Rocket trigger and Heinie Straight Eights and I'm done!

Probably for the same reason I'd ever sell (any) gun: usually to fund another project deemed a higher priority than owning a G29, ha. It could have been during the time I briefly got into pocket 9mm CCW pistols. It would have been when I decided a new G20SF was all I needed for both field and carry. I guess you could just say "phases" I'd went thru.

I've come to my senses now, at least. And this most recent G29 is a railed SF with a Gen 4 RSA which I'm loving even more than my previous G29's.

:-)

Love the G29. I have a 4.59" (?) StormLake on it, a little protruding in the front but no problem with CCW. Turns it closer to a concealable G20.

My issue is the SF frame, too small of a grip, and many times thinking about selling my G29SF to get a basic G29 but managed to talk myself out of it. I've found a happy medium: bicycle innertube, cut to to right side, it'd give a tight wrap on the grip, a hardy tight grip with additional thickness. Then a Pachmar (sp?) grip in the outtermost layer. Try the innertube grip. Not sexy, but superbly sure grip.

The combination of a heavier barrel (than stock) and bicycle inner tube helped tamed the snappiness of the G29. It actually feels great and comparable to my G20. It is an enjoyable to preferable gun. Recoil Spring is just a straight 23lbs one.

Also, I've heard an interesting comment from another site that a compound recoil reducer may cause the dynamic response of the gun a little springy or bouncy after a shot. However, the guy may be too much of a technical shooter who feels a lot more than a typical shooter, noticing things typical people don't notice. But his comment reminds me of the double spring design of the Sprinco recoil which I don't use any more. FWIW
