I'm not an LEO and I don't work in the CJ field (I'm in the Army) .......even though my BA and MA is in Criminal Justice. That said, here's an accepted definition of serial killers

Quote:
A serial killer is traditionally defined as an individual who has killed three or more people[1][2] over a period of more than a month, with down time (a "cooling off period") between the murders, and whose motivation for killing is usually based on psychological gratification.[3][4] Some sources, such as the FBI, disregard the "three or more" criteria and define the term as "a series of two or more murders, committed as separate events, usually, but not always, by one offender acting alone" or, including the vital characteristics, a minimum of two murders.[4][5] Often, a sexual element is involved in the killings, but the FBI states that motives for serial murder include "anger, thrill, financial gain, and attention seeking".[5] The murders may have been attempted or completed in a similar fashion and the victims may have had something in common; for example, occupation, race, appearance, sex, or age group.[6]
Using that definition, I find it hard to believe there are 300 active serial killers at any given time. I'm guessing 30'ish is more likely.

If there are that many active, why haven't they honed their craft towards politicians? They disappoint me.

Initially I thought I had double taped. I have to admit, it was a pretty cool coincidence.

I heard the statistic, and it was a lot closer to 30 than 300. A quick search says the interweb thinks it's about 50.

Do the math.

About 12,000 homicides every year. Half of those are gang related thugs killing gang related thugs plus that collateral damage.

That leaves about 6,000 other homicides every year. That is an average of about 16.5 per day. Some of those are justified. Some are crimes of passion.

So, that might leave about 3,000 unsolved murders of which some are serial killers. That would be less than 10 per day.

So, there might be 300 active serial killers per day, but they ain't active killing every day. If 300 are killing every day, that would be about 110,000 homicides per year. Those numbers don't add up.

That being said, I don't know the numbers for people that have disappeared and their bodies never found which could be the work of serial killers.

I do know there is a pedophilia network in this country that preys on the young that are never seen again. Many are used in satanic rituals, for prostitution, and other depraved activities. Just read up on the Franklin scandal for a better idea of that.

I suppose it could be possible depending on how you define serial killer. More than two murders? Plus, they might only kill a person once or twice a year or every few years.

Given as many people/children that disapear every year, 300 active serial killer would seem a bit low to me.

They don't kill every day. I lived where Gary Ridgeway plied his craft. Over the course of his career, twenty five years or so he killed over 50. He couldn't recall all that he killed. He did two or three a year.

There are thousands that go missing every year. So I would think many more than 300 is the real number. Tough to get the buggers to hold still long enough to count 'em though.

I think the validity of the 300 figure depends on how one views the word "active" as the 'cool down' periods for serial killers between murders can often last for years, even decades.

If one defines "active" as the number of open, suspected serial killer cases currently under investigation at any given time, the 300 number likely makes sense. If one looks at "active" as being the number of serial killers that are currently committing murders on a regular basis (weekly/monthly/semi-annually), the number is likely closer to 30-50.

I imagine your friend is a fan of the show The Following, where that "statistic" was trotted out in the series pilot. It might be an estimate floating around some law enforcement database somewhere, but it might also just be something he heard on tv.

Your friend probably got that number from The Following. It's a new TV show on FOX starring Kevin Bacon.

Statistic is about 12 seconds into the trailer.

It probably is an accurate number if you answered all the unknowns such as reaching a conclusion on the fate of the tens of thousands of active missing persons and easier matching of crimes separated by distance. I know the official number is under 100 for cases where multiple murders have been linked to one unknown suspect.

Yeah, Fox used that 'fact" a lot in their marketing for last 4-6 months or so. Tell your friend he might want to check a little more into local criminal activity and less time with Kevin Bacon and crew....

Being in law enforcement has taught me to distrust all crime statistics.
