Fitness is all about willpower. If you need a role model, read about this guy:

http://www.runnersworld.com/runners-...-david-goggins

He's a SEAL in his 30's that runs ultramarathons, and is the current record holder for most pull ups in 24 hours (over 4,000). He went from 290 to 190 in two months.

"That's when he discovered the Badwater Ultramarathon—the legendary 135-mile race from the floor of Death Valley to Whitney Portal. He called race director Chris Kostman to see if he could get in. Kostman asked Goggins how many 100-milers he'd run. None. How many marathons? None. Kostman told him to get some ultramarathoning experience if he wanted to run Badwater.
Days later, he entered a 24-hour race in San Diego. The ordeal left him with broken metatarsals in both feet and a case of kidney failure, but he did crank out 100 miles in less than 19 hours. Ten days later, he ran the Las Vegas Marathon in 3:08. And for ample measure, he entered the H.U.R.T. 100-Mile Endurance Run, one of the hardest ultras in the world. Goggins finished ninth. All this was in the span of two months."

I've never had one go two miles, but I've had them go over a mile. I'm not fast, but in the day, I ran 4-5 miles every day, and I used to yell at the guy I was chasing, unless you can keep this up for over five miles, I am going to catch you.

I had a partner who probably should have played pro ball. I know he had to have had 4.5 or 4.6 speed in a forty. It was fun to watch him run young guys down when he was almost 40 years old and see the look of disbelief in their eyes.

Have you run the Ironman?

Yes, I worked in the medical tent at Kona.

He was giving me garbage as I was using that as a "I believe I'm in at least reasonable shape" metric. Yeah, 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run.

Oh, my one and only marathon time is 6:28. I'll never run another one, that was enough.

Yup, I've heard it. Was trying to shorthand that we've talked about this before and it's more or less an inside joke about an IM.

'Twere all in good nature.

I'm not taking a position. It's a triathlon joke. I'm also not taking a stab at Herrglock. Not in the slightest.

Hell no I haven't done an ironman. Definitely not kona. I'm pathetic.

Curios, are you local in Hawaii or how did you get hooked up to work the race? I bet that was interesting.

It cracks me up because it assumes such a high level of fitness that now it only boils down to nutrition.

I'm 53 years old. 5-10 230 lbs. Grew up on a dairy farm and used to hard work. I've alway been strong. The best shape I was in during my life was at age 22 when I was discharged from the Navy at 165 lbs. I'm probably as strong as I've ever been, but I'm at lest 40 lbs over weight. I'm at the health club typically at lest 3 times a week doing weight machines, cardo & swimming. My problem is booze & diet. I also think I need to do m0re excerise out side of the health club. The people that inpress me as being fit are typically the smaller wiry guys, which I am not. Soooo long story short. NO I am not fit as I need to be, better than the avg 53 year old man...probably.

Don't sweat it. The running joke is an Ironman is a mobile buffet. It got weird from there

Almost 52. Work out 3-4 days/week. 2-3 hours of tennis on both Saturday and Sunday. 6'1", 178 lbs. Body fat tested 2 weeks ago at 11.3%. I can outlast kids half my age in tennis. In fact, even at 52, my plan in tennis is keep the rallies long and ardous, because I feel that most folks will not be able to keep it up for a few hours. In fact I played a kid about 26 years old a few weeks ago. He mentioned his last name which rang a bell to me. Turns out I played against his dad several times in the past. When I asked the kid if his dad was still playing, he told me no, cause he was too old! Even though it was close, I still beat him. The fact I told him I had pants in my closet older than him, just pissed him off more.

I keep myself pretty fit, but my limitations are my knees. I'd be in trouble if I had to run long distance. Walking and limited sprints wouldn't be an issue. I keep myself fit/ready with kettle bells, body weight exercises including pullups/chinups and dips, and the elliptical machine as well as other core exercises.

Not local Hawaii, but spend some time and know some medical folks there. Was invited to volunteer to meet research subjects at the finish line and walk them out (thru protocol). Also helped generally in the med tent, since that was the subjects last stop.

Not that eating is not also important, but of course hydration was the biggest factor there.

Related to the subject, I guess most folks tend to not only exercise less, but also eat and drink less healthily as we get older, due to work/travel/family demands. Makes a big difference, I think.

Might be imagination, but when out-of-shape, food/drink intake sometimes seems to make even more difference to performance and recovery than is does when in better condition.

Generally those who practice HIIT style training (sprinters) are in better shape than long distance runners. When your body is burning as many calories as a long distance runner, you will destroy muscle tissue.

The Okie Corral

Here is a good article on it.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/55...ers-sprinters/

In terms of general fitness the sprinter will be in better shape in regards to looks. They generally have more muscle mass and more lean body mass as well as a more physically developed musculature.

However both can be in great shape, but I would suspect the vast majority of serious sprinters will be in better overall physical shape than the long distance runners as well as they would have more muscle and lean body mass.

Not going against what you are saying, but dude on the right works out totally differently than the long distance sprinter. You dont get muscle like that doing hitt, you get that from lots of time at the gym lifting heavy. They have different objectives.
