This is a bit of a different kind of cover. I imagine most of you have heard of Alan Parsons. For a doctoral thesis project, he (covered) set the collected works of Edgar Allan Poe to music. This video doesn't do the CD justice. If you like his work, you should find and buy that cd. It is called Tales of Mystery and Imagination.

This guy is amazing. He plays, sometimes resurrects, songs as far back as medieval times. I've seen him perform live a couple of times and bought all of hs CD's. expand your horizons a bit and give him a listen.

when discussing the all time great cover tunes, you have to give credit to one of the greatest cover bands of all time....
that's right, the beatles.
the fab four filled their early albums with great covers, along with their timeless originals. they ripped everybody off-- black acts (chuck berry's 'roll over beethoven', little richard's 'long tall sally', barrett strong's 'money (that's what i want)'; white acts (lots of carl perkins, including 'matchbox', buddy holly's 'words of love'); even girl groups (the marvelettes 'please mr. postman').
it stands to reason, then, that one of may favorite covers of all time is the beatles covering the isley brothers 'twist and shout'. hate to say it, but it's better than the original....
it's fitting that my all-time favorite cover is of a song originally done by the beatles...... joe cocker's 'she came in through the bathroom window' (the live version, off 'mad dogs and englishmen'). pumping four by four, bluesy piano underneath, and cocker's all out energy...... brilliant stuff.

Oh yes. I was really the first "good" piece of music I shared with (now) Mrs. Countrygun. She had never really listened to anything like it. It is still her favorite album for putting the headphones on and ignoring the world.
One of (IMO) the greatest audio recordings of all time.

Man, Eric stole a lot of mine. Garage Inc by Metallica was about the best thing they have put out in a while. Morbidking also has great taste in music.
To get a little off beat (and a few of these I actually had in mind when I opened the thread)

Am I Evil. Which IS on the Garage Inc album but has been covered by Metallica LOOOONG before that. It is a Diamond Head song.

Motorhead version
I also like a lot of the Hayseed Dixie and Iron Horse Bluesgrass covers as well as some of the covers of Apocalyptica.

BTW, I dont care what anyone says, Orgy nailed it with their cover of the New Order song, Blue Monday
Dynamite Hack also did good with NWA's "Boyz in the Hood." (NSFW language) they get credit because they pulled it off "this way."
For use of a hook/Sample.....Oh by far, "Rhymin & Stealin" by the Beastie Boys using "Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath (Kid Rock did pretty good with American Badass)
Mamas Dont Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowbows (actaully and Ed Bruce song) but we know it as a Willie Nelson/Waylon Jennings song (they coverd a LOT of great songs)

This thread needs a sticky.
Alice in Chains- Barracuda and Sublime Simple Man really good choices. I would like to add just about everything from Tesla's Reel to Reel albums and Aerosmith Train kept a Rolling and Let the music do the talking.
