A Coolidge police officer was shot in the cheek Saturday by a ricocheted bullet from a fellow officer’s gun following a vehicle pursuit, authorities said.
The officer, who was not identified, suffered a minor injury from the bullet and was treated and released from a local hospital, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tim Gaffney said.
Another officer tried to stop the diver of a station wagon that was speeding near Arizona Boulevard and Gibson Avenue at about 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Gaffney said. The driver pulled over near the Bob’s Service Station, but when the officer was about to approach the car, it sped off through a field.
The officer chased the station wagon until the driver stopped and let out three passengers in the area of Congress and Washington Avenue, he said. The officer stopped and took the three passengers into custody while the car sped westbound.
Other officers found the car a short distance away, and as it drove toward officers’ vehicles, the driver turned south and hit a residential gas meter and 6-foot chain-link fence, Gaffney said. The car was high centered but the driver tried to dislodge the car to get free.
A Coolidge police officer fired a round into the rear tire of the car to try to prevent it from fleeing, he said. The bullet ricocheted after hitting the rim of the tire and hit another officer in the cheek.
The driver of the car, identified as Korrin Harmon, 34, of Florence, then surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident, Gaffney said.
Harmon told detectives he is on parole and “has always ran from the police” since he was 15, he said. He has a past history of drug offenses, felony flight and theft.
Authorities were in the process of booking Harmon into jail on multiple counts of aggravated assault and endangerment, Gaffney said.
