I can't tell you about the 125s but the 158 version is the only "Big Factory" off the shelf load I recommend for hunting deer with a .357. I suspect, like the 158 they would be a bit too much on the overpenerating side for a good SD load, and IMO too light for hunting. In short, I don't get what they are for

I do wonder how they would penetrate from a 2 inch barrel.

Agreed. They don't expand, so they act just like a FMJ.

Plenty. They just won't expand, though. Softpoints typically don't at handgun velocities.

I still wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of it, out of a 2" barrel and whatnot.
If that's all the ammo that I can get my hands on, I wouldn't cry myself to sleep. It goes bang and it will poke holes into whatever it impacts. That's good enough for me.

I bought a box for a concealed carry qual but ended up using a semi for broader carry capability. Instructor required factory ammo for the class.
It will simply be fodder for brass for reloading. Don

JSP ammo has been around a loong time. It is good stuff. I like to use JSP ammo in my Marlin 357 lever gun. I'm not sure that Remington uses low flash gunpowder in their 357 JSP ammo. In a 2" 357 CHL or home defense revolver, that might be a real problem with muzzle blast and flash at night. I'd recommend a dedicated short barrel defensive round with low flash gunpowder. I know that Hornady makes some and I'm sure other makers do as well.

I usually buy the 100 pack of Remington 125gr. SJHP which I have a good supply of right now. Shoots great out of my 6" GP100 and plenty powerful.

They expand quite well with plenty of penetration on hard targets from a 2" ....even better from a 6" barrel. I used to use them for wilderness carry before I started reloading.

What was the test on? Would they expand for Defense? Would it be a bad idea to drill a small, fine HP hole in their center?

thru two roasts, no bones and into a water jug
I would not use them for two legged creatures due to over penetration.

Don't know about now, but, back in '79, those 125 gr semi-jacketed hollowpoint Remingtons were the rounds that caused the forcing cone to split on my mdl 19-4!!!
Accurate, but hot!

It was more likely the documented characteristics of the 125 gn weight, as opposed to the 158s, that caused your forcing cone to crack rather than the load since factory .357s all have the same SAAMI max pressures and most are loaded close.

Yea, they're not good for K Frames but most everything else is just fine. In a K frame, heavier loads are required in .357, any weight in .38spl.

Could be the characteristics of the 125 grain weight, but, these Remington 125 gr SJHP rounds were what I was shooting when the forcing cone split.

The only 125 grain 'boolits' that have been through the barrel of that 19-4 since I got it back, have been "Nyclad" .38 Specials.
Now, over 15,000 rounds through that revolver!

I dont know when I was in Police work and in the academy they were JUST going over to Glocks at some places(late 1980's) but we(small town PD) and even at that time the State Police and the academy even still taught .357/Revolver. we shot mostly .38 special BUT at the end for qualification we shot a bunch of .357 magnum and all of that was 125 grain stuff duty carry stuff...that said I dont think anyone was using a model 19 almost everyone had a model 28 or the newer versions by that time of that model and a couple had GP100's as i recall. you would think in all that time they had used that ammo and as much as they had used it(especially on the academy trainer guns for those that had a malfunction on their gun..that if it caused a lot of damage they would have switched,or at least known about it)

The S&W mdl 28 and mdl 27 (even the 586/686) are fine with 125 gr SJHP ammo.
It's just the K-Frame Smith(s) that have issues.
After all, the K-Frame 19s were designed to train with .38 Special and then carry .357 in them, on the street.
I've never done a search, but, I'd like to know (just for kicks and grins) exactly how many mdl 19/66 had to have a barrel replacement, due to forcing cone split(s).

They are better expanders than FMJ but they won't expand or fragment anything like a SP rifle bullet. At least not out of my 4" 357. I'd use them for range work, definitely not for SD or HD unless that was all I had.

The K frames are thin on the bottom of the cone, hence why they crack with 125gr. .357 ammo. Any weight of .38spl in standard or +P is fine.

So is the 125 gr UMC bad for the S&W model 60 mentioned in the title or no?
