Why do it?

Why would a person drive 1000 mph and then 3,79 feet before the stoplight/sign hit the brakes to stop? Are these people wanting premature brake jobs, or are they just bat**** stupid

Okie, you work in the retail world. You know there is an over abundance of bat**** crazy out there. I only made it for 7 months in the retail world, I couldn't take it any more. Especially working the Ticketmaster counter when a popular band/singer came to town!

Brakes are made to stop the car. Using them is not abuse.

They weren't made to stop a vehicle going 1000 mph 3' from a stop sign though

Stupid.

Be thankful you are not in front of them when they try to stop.

Sitting at red light on divided highway. Guy hit me square from behind after leaving 66 feet of skidmarks. Shortened the frame on my Plymouth 4 dr by 18 inches, knocked me 36 feet through the intersection. battery sheared off the left side rocker arm assembly. Radio knobs in the drivers seat next to me. He said he couldn't stop in time. He plead guilty to DUI.

Takes all kinds.

There are a couple of shops in Las Vegas that only do brakes on taxis. They make a killing. Running them that hard over heats them and the pads fracture and wear out faster than normal. Not to mention warping the rotors.

okie, your remarks have one fatal flaw. You are proposing that human behavior is somehow rational, no? I suggest that a fourth-grader can infer that gaining a lot of velocity for a short distance when one has to stop at the end of that distance is, as you stated, stupid.

My father used to call that spending money on gasoline to wear out your brakes.

By assertion, nearly all of the drivers you will encounter have neither the intelligence nor the emotional discpline of an average fourth-grader. Therefore, the most reasonable solution is to let fourth-graders drive and make the adults ride in the back seat with the Spongebob Squarepants videos, right?

Actually, they were. Brakes are designed to slow and stop a vehicle from its top speed to zero. Otherwise, why have brakes?

I have long been an advocate of retro-rockets on
automobiles.

Note that the deceleration required to stop a two-ton mass at a velocity of 10000 miles per hour to velocity zero in 3 feet would likely leave the inhabitants of such vehicle squished like so many ketchup packets left under a tire.

That doesn't say that folk won't do it. Just means they'll only do it once.

Pleanty of folks who love to race to the next red light over here in Riga. The road I take on the way home from work is straight as an arrow and flat. You can see the next traffic light and you know you're not gonna get there when it's green, but some folks will change lanes 3 times trying to be the first one to the next red light....process repeats 3 times in about a mile. The lights aren't timed well here, but once every year, on the second Sunday afer Easter, I'm told they line up if you do the speed limit...

Yeah, I think it's kinda' stupid to drive like a mainiac just to slam on the brakes in a couple hundred yard.

My guess is that they are often the same people who make a bunch of lane changes so they can be first in line at the next red light. And after a dozen or two lights they may actually catch a yellow light and save the ninety seconds that would have been wasted waiting at the red light. And if they can do that twice a day that means they save an estimated fifteen minutes a week in driving time. Or maybe they just end up spending more time waiting at red lights and less time slowing down.

The other reason is they don't want anyone to get in front of them. So that along with jockeying to be the first car are the 2 reasons. I should know - I used to live in Philly. Where I live now it's not really a problem until I get to Tampa. Then it's revert to Philly mode. In Philly I put brakes on the front every year. Here I still have the originals at 51,000 miles. They are probably getting a little low but I have a light on the dash that comes on when they wear to a certain amount. And I still have the squealers.

Must be related to mine. Although with mine it's front end work.

She's got a knock on the left side on her 3 yr old Honda SUV. I abuse my 7 yr old truck - no sounds. ????

I see what you did there, clippy!

Btw - I see a guy in my RVM laying 66' of rubber, I'd make my own 66' skid mark.
