My old dog
My old dog Bracken, a 14 yr old Border Collie had a seizure this morning. Her hearing and sight have been declining over the last year. Bracken is now the old house dog, can't let her go to the barn and be around the horses anymore or chase after the geese in the pasture. She gets confused and I need to watch her very close when she is outside, wandered into the road a couple of weeks ago, fortunately, no cars coming down the road.
She is laying over by the back door, her favorite spot, except for my chair, asleep and snoring.
As long as she is here with us, she will be loved and taken care of.
I just needed to say those things.
I have had animals most of my life and the end of days never gets easier.
This getting old thing sucks

Dinky my friend
Same here. One of our dogs Mini Foxy is now 14 years old, completely deaf, has arthritis.
But as long as he does not suffer he will be loved and taken care of.
Me too have been around animal all my life. Lost some, it's always hard, but they give soooo much joy.
Dinky you are a good man

I will grieve for you when the time comes. Few things hurt as much as losing a good family member and loving friend.
Dogs seem to adopt us as much as we adopt them. I worry more about my boy getting old (12 now) than myself.
I can always manage my future, but he depends on me and sometimes it gets so hard.

I feel ya bro. My lab Milo is 15 and has had 3 strokes. She still loves to be petted and eat but other than that she is pretty confused and is not really there any more.
I love all my dogs and it hurts bad when one is sick or dies, but the love they give and are always willing to receive makes it worth it.
Prayers for your friend bro

Thank you and sending good vibes to Milo.
Have always thought of a dog named Milo as a Basset Hound

Dogs are family. They take care of us and we take care of them. Best wishes to you both. My dog left us yesterday and today my wife and I are both home from work. Mental health day. Take care.

Our mostly Schnauzer is 14, and deaf as a post. We stomp to get her attention, as she can feel the floor move. She's still nearly as full of energy, but I fear this will be the last Summer for her.

Ever wonder why the lifespan of a dog is so much shorter than that of a man?
So we can have the privilege of knowing several dogs during our lifetime.
I don't know about you but I like most dogs better than most people.
Bid your dearest friend, goodbye.
As soon as possible, get a new friend.

Well, my Bracken had a stroke Saturday morning
A very had day for me, she is doing well. Not eating much, had a few bites of food last night and is not drinking, only fluid is what she has gotten from her few bites of food. Bracken walks very stiff but does get around some.
This morning she greeted me at the side of my bed' as she has done most mornings for the last 14 years
I believe we shall make the trip to our vet in the morning

I'm sorry, Dinky.
You know that she trusts in you and depends on you to make this decision. You and she both know it's the right one.
We'll all be thinking of you.

Thanks Zonny
Yes it is the right decision but it is so hard.
I see the life in her eyes but her body is not able to do what I know she wants to do...

I had to put my best friend down in Aug of 2011, and it was one of the hardest things I had to do. He had been deteriorating for a few months and eating less and less. After two full days of not eating (even cooked him some bacon, more as a last meal than an effort to just get him to eat), we took him to the vet that next morning :(
Was one of the hardest things I've ever dealt with in my life. It was a long time before I finally got another dog because I was convinced I wouldn't put myself through that again.
Prayers of comfort sent to you and your friend.
