Mexicans in rural areas started arming themsleves to fight drug gangs

Nicholas Casey in his article “Mexico’s Masked Vigilantes Defy Drug Gungs – And the the Law” published by Wall Street Journal on Feb. 1, 2013 provided an interesting report on Mexicans arming themselves in rural areas to protect themselves from drug gangs and other criminals. According to the report local fresh born militias were able to restore order in rural areas under their control within several weeks where the Mexican government failed to do it in years.
Needless to say that Mexico is a country with total gun control.
The report proves once again the truth in Wayne La Pierre's statement - that the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

Despite Mexico's national gun laws,it's really 31 separate countries.Local cops only enforce the laws they want to.

Marihuana is already legal for personal use. It happened under calderon's administration.

It is the USA that needs to legalize the drugs.
But either way, what about trials? We should not encourage vigilante justice? Many people here seem to like the idea of the people arming themselves as it fits into their wondrous view of the greatness of the 2nd Amendment, but what about other civil rights? The right to a fair trial, an attorney, a speedy trial, no cruel and unusual punishment, and perhaps the right to not implicate yourself in crimes (AKA the ability to plead the 5th)?

Honestly, Mexico is in a much different situation than the US. In the US, the drug dealers/crime figures hide their crimes from law enforcement.
As I understand it, in Mexico they do not have to as they own law enforcement.
This does not mean that in the US we do not need to be concerned about protecting ourselves - of course we do. But we don't need vigilante justice here. Mexico is at the point where they may need it. Still, I would encourage the Mexican people to not go looking for fights with the gangs and other criminals, but to stand up for themselves.
