"Dredd" is great.
So, last night I watched the recent movie "Dredd," basically for lack of anything else on-hand. I was expecting another installment in the superhero/comics remake plague that has afflicted Hollywood, but what I got was the best sci-fi movie I'd seen in a while. It's easily on par with recent films I consider 'pretty good' - Star Trek 2009, District 9, The Hunger Games. Depending on what you like, maybe it's even better than those. (And btw Prometheus? Wish I hadn't bothered -- major disappointment. Looper? meh.)
So anyway, for the hesitant, here's my very brief pitch for "Dredd":
1. It's not a remake.
2. It's ******** awesome.
So, there you go. Unfortunately this movie lost money in the theaters, probably because most people assumed the same as me, that this was just a remake of the 1995 Stallone film. That sucks, cuz it makes a sequel less likely now. Hopefully they make it back up on BR / DVD sales and we get another movie.
One caveat - Dredd is extremely violent and gory. It might be based on a comic book, but it's not for kids.

Thanks for that. I almost ordered it OnDemand the other night but stopped figuring it would be an obvious remake of the 1995 film with better special effects. I agree with you on "Promethius" and "Loopers".

Dredd is definitely an amazing movie. I'm glad I bought it on blu-ray.

I'm going to have to check it out. Total Recall was AMAZING, way better than the original with Benedict Arnold. I think I would be a bit hit among the Glock Talkers. I redboxed it last night because there was nothing else to see, had no idea I'd be pleasantly surprised.

I really enjoyed the new Total Recall, I thought it was better than the first one.

I recently (within the past month) rented Dredd and Total Recall... Thought they were both decent. But I also liked Looper...

I did not know about this, will have to look into it. All I remember is the flop in 95 with stalone. I love super hero movies and waited with great anticipation. Only to find they ruined it.
It's amazing they can take a character with a good story line and ruin it when it should be a slam dunk,.

I wouldn't call it great, but I did enjoy it.
Part of what I hated about the 1995 one was that it was a Stallone flick first and foremost. He just happened to play a guy named Dredd.
Not a problem with the new one. He doesn't even take his helmet off.

Well allrighty then. I just reserved this and seven psychopaths at my local redbox.
I need to finish hanging my new speakers, and the sub should be here this afternoon.
Tonight is movie night.
I just need to pick up a sixxer of something palatable to imbibe with, and maybe a pizza.

12 Monkeys is a very underrated movie, but I enjoy it.
I hope they never remake it.

It was enjoyable. Very similar to Raid:Redemption.
Several standard plot points, but overall a fun watch.

When Karl Urban was offered the role, he said he had two requirements before he would even look at the script:
1) Dredd never removes his helmet
2) The movie would be rated R
That's an actor that understands his source material.

I liked it too. It's too bad it did so poorly at the box office.
The gun handling wasn't typical hollywood. They were actually aware of their muzzle, and seemed to do pretty well overall. When covering each other, if one would walk in front of the other, they would actually dip their muzzle.

TR was OK. But I think you have to judge each film on the era it was released in. The original Total Recall was WAAY better. . . in 1987. The new one was pretty darned good for 2012.
As for Dredd - how can you have a good action movie when Sly's sidekick is. . . .
ROB SCHNEIDER?????
I might have to catch Dredd onDemand.

I found it enjoyable. The blondie chick bugged the hell out of me for some reasons. I didn't even recognize the villain chick was the Spartan queen in The 300.

Yeah she is almost unrecognizable in Dredd. She was also Sarah Connor in the Terminator TV show and the Queen in Game of Thrones...

Dredd was amazing...I hated that it did so poorly in the box office. Hopefully the massive DVD/Blu ray sales and rentals will overcome the poor box office showing. SO GO BUY IT!
