I guess it depends on the smile. There is a friendly smile, a smirk, and then there is the creepy socio-path, make your skin crawl smile:

I can understand making a point for the 2nd amendment, however, where is the logic of carrying that weapon? Simply to provoke a reaction? We're trying to educate the folks on the fence in the realities of gun ownership and the b*11$!t laws the far left is trying to cram down the countries throat.
I respect his right, but disagree with his decision.

I wonder, if the kid had worn a sport coat and tie, done his sign/legality checking on another day, slung the rifle from the onset, walked in and picked up a shopping cart, and headed right for the produce section and started loading up veggies, whether anyone would have cared.
It's the weird totality of his actions that got him in trouble, IMO.

Kind of like on the internet forums - People continually flip someone off who they know is obligated to not break the rules in response. Yeah, usually that type of stupidity eventually yields the rewards that are earned.
And then there are those trying so hard to be offended that they're imagining things that haven't even been said in a thread.

He wanted a confrontation so he had to act a certain way to assure it happened.

It's surprising somebody didn't steal it. The prices those things are bringing right now, it belongs in a safe.

Dumb, if well intentioned. I only open carry at home, on the Interstate in my home state, maybe... Not a good move at a Kroger, with an AR. Gee whiz guy.

What woulda made me uneasy is the fact he walked to the store from his vehicle looked around returned to his vehicle and returned with the rifle.
If he walked into the store straight from his car rifle slung over his shoulder and began shopping I wouldn't even second guess him.

Ok look. I'm as pro 2A and open carry as anyone but if I saw some guy in the store with an AR over his shoulder I would have kept my eye on him the entire time and probably left quietly if I had my kids. Mostly because I would only have a pistol.
Like it or not its abnormal. If it was commonplace that would be different.

Why anyone would want to cart around something like that in a grocery store is beyond me. Hell, when I'm carrying, the last thing I want to advertise to anyone is who to shoot first.
This act does nothing to further 2A causes. This does nothing but make us look like nuts to Mr. and Mrs. Gun Neutral.

That was stupid. Totally not what we need happening. Doesn't help anyone.
I have no problem with open carry. I hate to say the phrase "common sense" because the left is using it a lot lately, but when I say common sense I mean something people have in their head, not something the government puts on paper. People don't get too excited over a pistol or revolver, but for pete sakes who open carries a rifle around in a business like that. Just asking for trouble.

All of the behaviors are suspicious but the note in the pocket is most troubling.
He did no favors for the RKBA with this stunt.

Sounds like poor judgement coupled with learned fear.
